I consider myself handy, I do all the other work around the house, but I am a little worried about causing a leak.

  1. I would get a professional just incase something happens to you..:S

We Dint want that happening !!

    :)

  2. I would hire a professional and here's why. If you are putting in an attic fan I suggest making a box around the fan with a lid that can be raised a lowered before/after you turn it on. I chain that comes down through the ceiling that's maybe in a closet. Speaking from experience, we wish we would have had our contractor do this (like my brother had his contractor do) because in the winter we loose alot of heat through the attic fan. Something for you to think about... other then that we love our attic fan.

  3. answer this question;  are you comfortable cutting holes in your roof?  i'm not.   have them installed for you and you wont have to worry.

  4. It really depends on the type you are installing.  We have attic vents on the eaves of our house and hubby used them to install our attic fan without having to cut into the roof.  Home Depot (and I think Lowe's, too) has a free workshop on installing an attic fan that you can take some Saturday to determine whether it is a project that you can take on.  Hubby did ours without incident and it has operated without failure now for about 5 years.  Ours has an automatic temperature sensor and turns itself on if the temperature gets above 90 degrees up there.  Probably, the heat, the insulation and the electrical wiring were problematic, but nothing that a handy homeowner couldn't do.

A coroner is criticising the Government for doing little to warn of the dangers of do-it-yourself home insulation, after a man was killed by electrocution while stapling aluminium foil to floor joists under his home.

The death is one of three this year to have happened in identical circumstances.
