Question:

Should I try and sell my car, or should I scrap it?

I recently purchased a 1985 Buick Skylark, which I now see has some issues. The car does not currently run, and has several hundred dollars worth of repairs to get it running again. Would it be worth it to me to try and sell this car for maybe 4 or 5 hundred bucks, or would I have better luck selling it to a junkyard?

Thanks.

  1. I had a 1985 Honda civic that was running and it was really hard to sell it. The only thing wrong with it were cosmetic issues (i.e paint job, interior). Finally found a buyer that paid the $800 we were asking but most people would offer ridiculous amounts like $200. If it has several hundred dollars worth of repair to even get it running, it might be hard to sell and i'd see what a junkyard can offer first. Of course if its nice looking it may be easier to sell because people are iodiots and care more about what the car looks like than if its a good car.

  2. id try to sell it.nothing wrong with that as long as the buyer knows what their getting into. scraping it would get you like 50 bucks. so selling it would be the more lucrative investment.

  3. I think I would try and get it running and then try and sell it. Junkyards won't give you much for it. You could try and sell it piece by piece and you would make money doing it that way, but it would take you a long time to do it that way.

  4. I would definitely try and sell it, but I wouldn't pay for an ad as this would just be a waste of money.

I would place a FREE ad on some auto classifieds sites as well as maybe craigslist.org first just to see if there is any interest. If these ads fail, then I would consider scrapping it.

    Either way, good luck mate!

  5. Check your offer both ways.  If not sold to the salvage yard, be sure your bill of sale shows the car is being sold AS IS, no guarantee for any type of state inspection and remove your tags prior to releasing the car to the new purchaser. If you decide to fix, check with the trade/vocational schools in the area where they learn to repair the cars if you buy the parts needed and they do the labor at no charge.

  6. Well, if the car has a lot of problems, I would sell it for scrap metal. That's because the next owner could get seriously injured driving it, or they would just sell it for scrap metal.
