Question:

Should I try new formula?

My son gets both breast milk and formula and is really fussy at night. If he had a problem with his formula wouldn't he be fussy all the time? His doc said I can try different kinds but I wonder if I even need to.

He's tried Enfamil Lipil, Enfmail AR and Similac Advance... again because his fussiness is mainly at night I don't know if he needs a special formula or not.

What do you moms/dads think?

  1. I was always told not to feed both breast and formula..  I would suggest something gentle, like the Carnation Good Start (both of my girls did GREAT on this)...  Maybe he has that reflux disease - that usually occurs worse at night but yeah just at night that is odd...

  2. How old is he?  could he possibly have colic?

  3. it is not good that you are changing his formulas at such a young age. this will make him fussy as well however some gas drops like mylicon will help out alot just be careful and do not give too much!

  4. I think that his discomfort is most likely caused by gas; not his formula. At night, when you both are trying to relax, he can really feel his gas pains. Try some gas drops and exercises to keep his digestive system moving.

  5. Try to leave the formula the same for awhile. When my son was that young I found this method to work for him. After every once of formula burp the baby. After the baby is done eating have the baby sit up for at least 20 minutes(I put my son in a bouncy seat or swing). Buy doing this it helped my son's food digest before I lay ed him down.

  6. i have a two month old daughter and i breastfed like 60-70% of the time and give her 2-3 bottles a day. but she is a really fussy girl to. mostly at night as well. once she gets to sleep she stays a sleep through the night, only one of two feedings a night. but i first had her on nutramigen. because when her brother was a baby he was allergic to dairy and soy. but then we tried soy-probee and she is doing ok. im afraid to try a dairy base because when i stopped eating/drinking dairy in my diet it improved her fussiness. im not sure. having a newborn is really hard when it dosent go picture perfect.  well i can say my daughter just turned 2 months and the last week has been so good, barely no fussing. so maybe it will get better. i know when you try new formulas you have to give a week or two to see improvements if any. so how did you know he had reflux. my oldest did but i knew cause he has projectile vomiting. i think my daughter has it to, but she doesnt vomit, but her spit up smells like acid. so can you please tell me how you knew? and what meds is he on? my son was on previced powder form.

and and dont listen to people who say 'oh he is just colicky' there is always a reason why babies are colicky, people just use that as an excuse cause they dont want to find the cause.

    best wishes....

  7. Ask your dr about changing formulas.  My daughter does not have acid reflux and no vomiting, But we had her on enfamil lipil first and she spit up after every feeding.  She also cried for about an hour after every feeding, until I went to carring her around with my hands under her tummy to put pressure on her hurting belly.  Even Mylicon didn't work (by the way the store brand has the exact same med in it & cost half as much) much of the time.  We switched to enfamil gentilease and she rarely spits up now and almost never has gas pains except when she has lots of veggies.

Also you probably put him to sleep on his back- ask your dr if you can try him on his side to help with the pains
