Should I try the harp?

Okay, so I've played the flute for about 3 1/2 years. I'm pretty good. I'm in band (just finished my freshman year of high school). I played piano for a few years. I didn't get very far, but that helped me a lot when learning flute, as far as reading notes and that sort of thing. Now, I'm really interested in learning to play the harp. It's so beautiful and I would love to try it, but the cost is a lot, so my mom wants to make sure it's something I'd really be into before she spends money on lessons. I'd love some feedback from any harpists (is that the right word?) on if you think I should try it out. Also, how do I find teachers? I've looked around on the internet, but haven't found any nearby (Portland, Oregon). Thanks so much!

  1. sure good try something new

  2. yea! the harp is a beautiful instrument

  3. I think harps require serious dough. So I would say yes, try it. But see if you can rent or borrow one first. If you like it enough then consider investing in an instrument. For lessons call the Portland orchestra (If they have one) Or get in touch with any professional classical musician, they might be able to steer you in the right direction.

  4. I think if you play the harp ,it will cost you a lot of money and you only find a teacher if by where you live there is a band club

  5. Try it.

Music is so personal that sometimes our instruments change as we change. As someone who has also played the flute and piano and is also considering the harp I know where you're at.

Yes it is expensive but so important to have lessons.

Do you do grade examinations? Do any of your friends? If not, find out the person in change for the royal school of music in your area, or Trinity college of london examinations in your area. They all have lists of qualified teachers. Also, contact any university in your area and ask to speak to the music department. They know qualified teachers you can go to, or even their students who are at the universities could start you off before you move on... and chances are they will end up qualified anyhow!

    Best!

  6. I am not a harpist, but I am a musician and I took some harp lessons when I was in high school.  I quit because I was already in a bunch of things and harp required more practice time than I was willing to give.  Beautiful instrument, and if you made it to pro you could earn lots of money

And look for a troubadour harp to begin.  It's a lot smaller than the big pedaled ones, and I'm sure costs a lot less.  It's a good one to learn on, then if you're sure you're going to stick with it, then you can buy a big one.

About teachers, I would call the nearest university music department and ask, or your closest professional orchestra and see who they hire.  Ask if they teach lessons.

  7. I am not a harpist but decided to give you some feedback on your question. You are extemly young and should try new things.... Try not to live your life by doing what other people think you should do! The best thing is to beleive in yourself and not second guess your own thoughts and talents. Best of luck in you decision! :)

  8. I've wondered myself if it's quite easy for a harpist to get gigs. It seems that, in concerts I've been in, we've always had to hire a harpist.

I'd go for it. Would a local music store have one you could rent while you're deciding if you like it?

  9. why not.....

  10. i think you should try it.

    it's individual, and different.

    and it's very pretty.

  11. The harp is beautiful! I have a friend who plays, and it totally blows me away every time I hear it!

...price is probably what makes it such a rare talent :S

If you put your heart into it and love doing it, its always worthwhile!
