Question:

Should I try wearing my retainer?

So basically I took my braces off two years ago. I did not wear my retainers as often as I should have. And now I am facing the consequences....they don't really fit.

I do NOT want my parents paying for my braces another time. So I have come to a dilemma--whether I'm gonna have them straightened by the might of my retainer or just let them go crooked.

The problem with my retainer is that...it's so tight on top, I'm afraid it will cause a crack on the porcelain crown. The crown is already cracked, should I just wear it? Or is it going to do more serious damage?

  1. Cramming that retainer onto your teeth now will probably cause more damage than is already there.   If it's been 2 years,  not only are your teeth in a different spot by now,  but your jaws may have outgrown them.    You will probably hurt your teeth and crown by forcing it in there.

If your teeth have not drifted too crooked,  they can sometimes be straightened by a NEW retainer,  so you wouldn't have to go through braces again,   but you will need to see the orthodontist to make you a " tooth moving "  retainer,   (he will call it a functional retainer )

You can also get new retainers that fit better that will simply hold the teeth where they are now,  so they don't go crooked farther.

Almost all orthodontists will give you a free visit to just peek at your teeth,   see how crooked they have gone,  and let you know all your options and their prices.    I would go to this free visit,  learn what the deal is,  and then decide.

But cramming non-fitting retainers in will not be good.....bring them along to your visit to the dentist though,   there is always hope he can maybe just adjust the ones you have to fit you better,   THEN you can wear them knowing your not hurting yourself.

  4. I'd say ask your orthodontist.  I didn't wear mine for a while and my bottom set went CROOKED!  The orthodontist gave me another set with springs in it that are trying to correct the misalignment.  I have the old set and haven't attempted to put them in until the teeth get straight.
