Should I tune up my HVAC unit?

how often I need to do the HVAC tuneup? My house is 3 years old and the HVAC works just perfect. I heard someone told me annual tuneup is good for longterm. but someone else told me it is not necessary other than changing the air filters inside house and water spray on the coil.(outside unit). I am confused.

  1. If you call an A/C company to do a "tune up" on your A/C all they will do is wash the condenser coils outside with a water hose, they will check your refrigerant charge, and they will replace your filters. This will cost you about $80-$100 on average. You do not need an A/C company to do this for you. You can wash your coils yourself, but make sure to remove the disconnect from the panel next to the condenser outside before you wash it.You should wash your condenser atleast once a year. Also, change your filters regularly (I like to change them every 2-3 months). Lastly, there is a simple way to see it your charge is close to being accurate. If your place your hand on the copper lines going to the condenser outside, the big line (suction line) should be as cold as a Coke from the fridge. The little line (dischage line) should be luke warm. If they do not follow this description then call an A/C company.

  2. HI

Well I would have it checked at lest every couple of years if not every.. if the Freon gets low and the compressor doesn't shut off it well burn up and the cost would be a lot more than a yearly tuneup.

    good luck
