Let's say thousands of people in your state have lost their electricity due to a natural catastrophe. But you still have electricity at your house. Should you turn off devices that use alot of electricity for entertainment purposes (HDTV, video game console, portable DVD player)? Will that have an effect on the regaining of your neighbors' electric power or not?

  1. you should turn everything off except one light to know when the power has come back on.

  2. While their fixing the problem I don't see why your power would affect them in anyway.

But when their fixing it, sometimes they have to turn off the power and turn it back on.

So I would avoiding doing anything major on a computer like a project or report.

  3. You should turn everything off with the possible exception of one light so you know when the power comes back on.  Even then, leave everything off for at least 15 minutes after power is restored.  When power comes back on after a situation like this it often fluctuates and even turns off and on several times.  You don't want sensitive things on during this power restoration stage because of this.

  4. If you have power then you can leave everything on unless you notice power fluctuations. The local power companies will usually have to repair wires and poles and transformers. The power you use will have no bearing on how quickly they do this.
