I thought I could purchase more memory. Or would it be better to just get a new computer all together. Especially since everything is suppose to go to vista. It's all a bit confusing for me..

  1. honestly 1:3 people downgrade from vista to XP, but your right, vista is what were going to move to, a 64bit operating system.

in my opinion if you have about $500 you can get a very nice computer (noting extra just a computer) which will have 1-2gigs of ram a solid 64bit cpu that's dual core and the ability to upgrade the graphics to cutting edge if you wanted too...  it would be vista ready and keep you going until the next big break in CPU's happen and we either break the 3.0ghz barrier or we go 4+ cores..

www.newegg.com is a great resource for both a new computer or upgrades for ram, its very user friendly and there search functions will allow you to break down what you want to meet your needs and price..

my suggestion, use what you have (monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers) and buy a new computer that will last you for the next few years

  2. The most simple and affordable move is to buy more RAM.  As someone else mentioned, most users prefer XP over Vista.  But Vista will have a longer shelf life of support from M/S than XP will.   If you're considering this as a stop gap until you can afford a new machine or decide to switch platforms (ie MAC) then by all means purchase some new RAM.

  3. In general, for a computer as old as yours, it pays to get a new computer. Many things change over time and entirely new features and capabilities are built in. Newer computers have slots for better video cards, for better CPUs, faster USB, more room for total ram and better and faster motherboards.

The amount of memory that you have is far too little for XP.. The bare minimum is 512k and 1 gb for decent performance. Your motherboard may not support enough. Go to www.crucial.com and run their utility to see how much you can install.

Ram is the most crucial item for performance and if you get enough you will have the basics.

  4. get another 1gig at least even it if its 2 x 512 sticks. but i find XP runs best on 2 to 3 gig of RAM. chances are that your computer runs on DDR RAM and its still expensive to buy, so id just stick with 1 gig anyway :)

  5. A 192 mb of ram is a bit minimal for running XP. If this is what you show for RAM, you must have upgraded to XP at sometime. How old is your computer? I have a labtop at 1.3 ghz Centrino and a desktop at 2.5 ghz running at 1g ram and 2g ram. Both are about 4 years old and running XP.
