Question:

Should I upgrade my camera?

I don't know much about cameras, but enjoy taking photos as a hobby. I would like to get a little more involved with it, but am not sure if my current camera is worth keeping. It is a Cannon PowerShot A95 and seems to work fine, but I have seen newer models (like the A590IS) that outwardly seem to be a better camera. Should I invest in a new camera or in additional equipment for the one I have (lenses, filters, etc). Is the A95 a decent camera?

Also, I'm interested in PhotoShop Elements 6. Is this a good entry level program for hobby photographers? I'm not looking to do anything spectacular here, I just want some nicer photos!

  1. I own the A-590 and it is one of the best under $200 camera's out there. Takes very nice pictures except in low light without the flash.

Uses AA batteries and SD card.

You can use this camera in full manual mode so you can learn how to get creative with your photography. Adjust ISO,shutter, apature.

The image quality on the LCD isn't the greatest and when using the flash there is a long delay between shots but this is minor on an inexpensive camera. Buy it you will like it!!

  2. You can compare the two cameras here---

It looks like the 590 is a little better camera, in that it has 3 more MP, and a little longer zoom, and Image stabilization.   But although the one you have is 4 years old, it looks to me like an okay camera.

I have the 540, and I could buy an additional telephoto and a wide angle lens, but have not done so.  I am satisfied with my camera the way it is.  As far as filters go, it's pretty hard to put a filter on a point & shoot.  I wouldn't invest any more money in the camera you have, if you are happy with the way it is.

If you like the one you have, why not just use it awhile longer?   There are new models coming out all the time, and later you might see one you like better than the 590.  BUT if you are beginning to become disatisfied with your A95, the 590 would be a good camera that doesn't cost a lot.

You might want to think about getting one with more zoom next time.   And be sure you get one with a viewfinder like you have now.  The LCD screen is about worthless in bright sunlight, and you will be glad you stuck with one that has the viewfinder!

  3. If you'd like to upgrade your camera, and can afford to, then by all means do so.  If you want to get more into photography, you may want to consider upgrading to either a DSLR or if you don't want to go that far one of the Canon Powershot S5 IS cameras or the like.  With the S5 IS you will have more manual control over the camera, and can learn more about what elements make a good photograph.

PS E 6.0 is an excellent program to learn photoshop techniques, and is very good for a hobbyist.
