Question:

Should I use a J-Channel or starter strip of vinyl siding for a shed sitting on a cement pad?

I had someone tell me to use a J-channel, but I am not sure. The shed sits on a cement pad so the J channel would nearly be right on the cement. I am concerned about rain falling in the j-channel and not being able to get out. Thanks!

  1. on a pad, go with j. the water will escape out the ends. you'll never get the siding down tight with starter strip. good luck!

  2. Rick is right. Do not use a J channel. By doing it Ricks way, you can leave the starter strip high enough off the slab to get the first course of vinyl into the starter strip and still prevent water from seeping under the shed.  I have had better luck with white silicon than clear. The clear seems to debond from concrete after awhile.

  3. To get a good watertight seal,Put 90 degree flashing against the wall on the slab.Silicone flashing to the slab and nail it to the wall. Then start with starter strip

  4. Better to use a starter strip as this what it is designed to do. It avoids  rain water being trapped against the bottom sill.
