Should I use the 2 ohm or 4 ohm version?

I am using a JL Audio 500/1 amp. In case you are not familiar, the JL produces 500 watts whether running at 4 ohm, 2 ohm, or 1.5 ohm.

I am purchasing one 12 inch Alpine Type R.

I am wondering if it would be better to buy the dual 2 ohm, and wire it up to 4 ohm.... or get the dual 4 ohm, and wire it to 2 ohm?

(Once again, consider that the JL 500/1 puts out the same 500 watt rating in both loads.)

  1. Yeah!! What he said above..

  2. I'd purchase the dual 2-ohm Type R, and wire it for a 4-ohm load.  An advantage would be that you could, if you wanted, buy a second Type R and combine the two for a 2-ohm load on the same amp.

  3. the first guy made a good point, but failed to realize that those subs would be way underpowered running off one JL 500.  if u got another type R, u would also need (WANT) another JL 500 regardless.  But go with the 2 ohm version and wire it to 4 ohms because u get better sound quality with a 4 ohm than a 2 ohm load
