Should I use the coals with my hookah or not?

even if i put the coals on top of the screen, wont i be inhaling some fumes from the coals?

You have to. It's the way hookah was designed. The Tobacco has to be cooked by heat.

This was originally designed to replace coals, but now all vendors market it as a portable coal heater because it can't pull off replacing coals.

I'm pretty sure you need the coals on to keep the hookah burning, I know at the hookah lounge they're always changing the coals when they die out, have you ever tried to smoke a hookah that had dead coals on top? Not pleasant my friend!
