Should I wait to purchase blu ray player?

I've heard some rumors that now isn't a good time to buy blu ray because version 2.0 is going to be released in late 2008 and that discs made now won't be forward compatible. Is this true or false? Is it okay to purchase one now?

  1. h**l yeah you wait.

DVD players were 300 bucks or more less than 5 years ago.

Now?  You can get one for less than 30 bucks.  they cost NOTHING.

Right now?  Blu Ray is over 500 bucks.

In a year or 2 they will be under 300.  In another year or so after THAT they will be as cheap as dvd players.

Buying a Blu Ray right now would be stupid.

  2. Ok the thing is that the ps3 yes is 2.0 profile but if you are worried about the sound TruHD Lossless you will not get it because sony will not come out with an update for it for some reason. PS3 only plays Dolby Digital and DTS Master Audio but i yet to heir Master Audio play because i cannot find a Blu Ray that will play in this format so i don't know if PS3 lived up to the that format to play Mater Audio. On the other hand there will be this summer new players out buy sony BDP-S550 and Daewoo DBP-1000. Sony will be a better player and it will have all we need i will be buying the sony player price is told $500 if you resurch it on google. I recamand copy paste to see the player and specs of the sony S550

  3. Um, the PS3 does play Dolby True-HD and there are several movies in DTS Master Audio that sound incredible.  I just watched I,Robot the other night on it and I was amazed at the sound.

  4. Version 2.0 has already been released - the PS3 has already received this as an update.

Of course, it will be awhile still before we see any BR2.0 discs.

Blu-ray 2.0 only refers to the special features on the disc.  The main movie with its various languages and subtitles, will be unaffected.  At worst, you wouldn't be able to play one of those (stupid) mini-games, like the Pirates Dice game on the 2nd Pirates Of The Caribbean disc.

If you want to buy a blu-ray player, I'd strongly recommend the PS3.  Get the 40GB one - it's cheaper, and you don't need the larger hard drive or its backwards compatibility with the PS2 if you aren't going to be playing games at all.

The PS3 can receive updates to its blu-ray software from the internet, making it the easiest the player to update.  It also has enough power in terms of hardware to handle any future changes to the blu-ray spec that may come along down the road.  It's also the cheapest blu-ray device out there at $400.

Realistically though, I don't see an overwhelming NEED to upgrade immediately.  Your standard DVDs can be upscaled to near-HD quality, and the blu-ray library is...a bit lacking when compared to regular DVD.  Personally, I don't see any problem waiting another 6 or even 12 months.  By that time, the blu-ray spec will settle down and be finalized (I hope!), and it'll give the manufacturers more of a chance to work out any other kinks in the technology.
