Question:

Should I work as a teacher or engineer when I'm in Perth July 08?

I've a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3-4 years of work experience. But I switched to being a trained secondary school teacher in Singapore for another 3-4 years.

Will my previous engineering credentials count for nothing?

  1. To teach in secondary schools in Perth, you must be registered with the West Australian College of Teachers.

If you're only here for a month, you might be able to do some relief teaching, but you would still need to get organised and registered.

  2. Engineer. That's definitely a no-brainer. You'll be paid about 5 times more than a teacher and can pick up contract work far easier as an Engineer, particularly in construction and mining.

  3. You would have no problem finding work in either field though be aware that teachers earn less then engineers. Basing yourself in Perth try and get some work in the mining industry, it pays extremly well.

A bachelors degree will probably carry more weight and would be fully recognised, I'm not sure if your teaching would be as you don't mention any qualifications.

  4. You will find plenty of work in either field, there is a shortage of workers in both. Just pick which one you prefer. I presume you have a skilled migration visa to allow you to work?
