Should NASCAR "pre-define" things that are detrimental to the sport and give reasons why?

  1. I think they have to have a vague rule.  The crew chiefs cook something new up all the time.  There is no way they could cover (or even think) of all the different possibilities.

    However, I think they should stop calling driver altercations as "detrimental to racing".  Make it its own rule- it happens often enough.  There are a few other situations where the abuse the term as well.

There are things that are predefined in the NASCAR rulebook as "Actions detrimental to stock car racing" and the punishments are clearly delineated.  However, there is some leeway and room for growth, as the people who set the rules have realized that things will come up that are not specified and they need something that allows for that.  As to specifically why things can be detrimental to stock car racing, anything that damages the credibility of the results risks making NASCAR like professional wrestling or the NBA.  Also, anything that can cause sponsors to leave the sport is detrimental due to the fact that it can derail the money train that is usually unloading its cargo at the France family home.
