Question:

Should Nascar be allowed to cut Toyota's horsepower?

Or should the other makes try to catch up, it is a competition afterall.

  1. No, In fact I think they just started something that they (We) are going to regret in the future. Nascar approved that engine package the same as the rest of the engine packages being used right now! This decision just leads us closer to the spec engine for all cars. I didn't like the advantage Toyota had, but I was willing to live with it knowing that next season it would be someone else. Now because of the action Nascar took the next manufacturer that gets an advantage doesn't have a chance of keeping it for long!!!

  2. I think the others should catch up. Chevy, Ford and Dodge have been in racing for years so it's not like they don't have the know how.  =o`)

  3. I asked a question similar to this the other day.

    1) Toyota fans feel like they were robbed.

    2) Every other fan feels like they have been being robbed because of the horsepower advantage.

    Here is the answer. Toyota had no old engines designed with old technology. All they had was new engine designs with new technology. If NASCAR was capable of keeping the playing field level then they should have forced everyone to submit new engine designs before Toyota was allowed to race.

    It's either let Toyota continue to have an advantage, which would give them wins for the rest of the year and hurt the sponsors of other manufacturers and teams,  or either do what they did. They leveled the playing field.

    In all honesty, I don't think the fans in here need to be getting angry with all the other fans in here when it is NASCAR they should be getting angry with.

  6. Nascar's been "leveling the playing field" since forever. This is nothing new.

    Tina, if you knew anything about how long it takes to design an engine and the business plan of a major corporation, you'd understand that you can't just 'Force' a major manufacture to submit a new engine plan! Come on!

  7. strangely enough, i now believe that the new nationwide rules that require a stricter restrictor plate on newer engines might just be a case of "making the best of a bad situation."

    the following quotes from an autosports forum regarding the new rule might illustrate a little - it did for me:

    "What this [new rule] appears to do is allow the Chevrolet teams to run the R07 engine in Nationwide. Previously they were only allowed to run the SB2. (SB2 runs 4.40-inch bore spacing; R07 and Toyota engines are 4.500 inches.)

    Chevrolet asked NASCAR to run the R07 in Nationwide, the only problem being this would effectively obsolete their SB2 engines. NASCAR's decision allows Chevy nationwide teams to run the R07 or the SB2 with the appropriate restrictor, and also gives the Ford a break along with the SB2.

    ...

    The bigger bore spacing indicates a purpose-built engine. The SB2 is built on the original 1955 SBC, with all the compromises thereby accrued. This new [rule] is mainly a way to allow engines from two different stages or eras in development to compete with each other. "

    so it seems nascar is trying to kill many birds with one stone.

    1) nascar painted themselves into a box with the owners because they forced toyota to build all new engines. they did and in doing so they developed "purpose-built" engines that produced more power. since toyota had no teams using "old engines," they didn't have to worry about making any "old engines" and parts inventories obsolete, thus costing teams lots of extra money unnecessarily.

    2) chevy finally worked the bugs out of their "purpose-built" engine, the R07 (which has the same size bore as the toyota), but couldn't get it approved it seems because the cost would be prohibitive to smaller teams, who couldn't afford to dump all their SB2 engines and parts and buy all new R07 engines and parts. crew chief chad walter discussed this in an interview earlier this month:

    "Walter: We really don't have a reason why our National Guard Chevrolets aren't using the new R07 engines yet. We just want to compete with the other manufacturers on an even playing field within the current rules. The R07 does that while the SB2 does not.

    Also, the RO7 comes at a higher price tag than the current SB2. With all of the other proposed changes [COT style chassis, most notably] that NASCAR is reviewing for the Nationwide series, the RO7 would really hit some of the under-budgeted teams hard."

    3) dodge and ford (particularly jack roush) have been fighting the approval of the R07 as they have nothing comparable ready, and they aren't willing to lose their current inventories and pony up the bucks for developing and running new "purpose-built" engines:

    "Chevrolet has been pushing for NASCAR to OK its Cup-side R07 engine for Nationwide competition; NASCAR has been pushing Ford to design a new Nationwide engine, but Ford men say they can’t afford to make obsolete what engine parts they’re currently using.

    “If they want to kill that series, go right ahead,” Roush said."

    bottom line, it looks like nascar is trying out a "compromise" solution that brings toyota into line with the others in terms of horsepower AND allows chevy to finally get approval for the R07 without ticking off all the teams who can't afford one or who have a manufacturer that doesn't have a new engine ready. thus, newer better engines (toyota, chevy R07) used by teams who can afford them have to use a stricter restrictor plate. teams who can't afford or don't have newer better engines (chevy SB2, ford, dodge) don't have to use that plate.

    not that i necessarily like what nascar did, how they did it, how they got into this mess in the first place, and why they did it the way they did, but i think i'm beginning to understand it...
