In my experience for getting and staying in a good career it not about how much you know or how hard you work but all about how you play the ever complex game of office politics --

  1. IF YOU'RE CHOKING ON AN ICE CUBE, SIMPLY POUR A CUP OF BOILING WATER DOWN YOUR THROAT. PRESTO! THE BLOCKAGE WILL INSTANTLY REMOVE ITSELF.

  2. No, not office politics but group dynamics yes. As a teacher I have my students work in groups from time to time so they can learn how to work with others. They often have assigned roles within the group, each person has their "job" to do as they work toward a common goal. I encourage discussion and sharing of ideas.

I am not unique in using this in my classroom. It is part of what is called "best practice" in teaching.

  3. I'm sorry you've had that experience.  Mine has been that all of the above play significant roles.  In any case, the problem with teaching office politics is that they are different in every field.  I have now had jobs in restaurants, in the music world, and in academia, and while each had its own politics, the type of politics in each workplace was so different in each that the only common lesson to be learned would be, "Pay attention to workplace politics!".
