Question:

Should Palestine and Israel be granted EU membership ?

I was just thinking of ways to solve the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

If both were to be accepted as EU member states, then it would encourage the two states to put aside their differences for the common good and work their differences out, as they both have alot to learn from each other.

It seems that both states need A Broker state and that could be the European Union, as it has an international respected reputation in that regard.

Take the exampe of Irish and UK membership.

Irish-British relations have improved immensely because both countries have had to put aside their differences and work together as part of the EU.

What do you think???

  1. well-intentioned, but naive question

(actually Israel -while not in the EU- is a member of UEFA, the European Broadcasters Union and the Eurovision song contest, etc)

  2. The Ashkenazi Jews of "Israel" (Descendants of non-Semitic Khazarian converts) should definitely be granted EU membership, back where they came from- the steppes of Eastern Europe.

  3. Definately Israel YES!!!

The EU has grown to incorporate a large number of middle-income countries such as Poland, and many EU states.. There should be no hesitation in accepting Israel into EU, it has strong links with europe historically anyway. As far as I'm concerned, only Israel should be considered at the moment, as i believe that peace has been disrupted by actions on the palestinian side, which should go against the EU's beliefs. Possibly if friction was to ease, then both could enter together, but as it stands, only Israel.

And also, I like Israel as a country and tourist destination, would suit me if it joined EU.

  4. The State of Israel might qualify for EU membership, but the non existing State of Palestine can not apply. The first steps towards peace in the Middle East is that the Arabs recognise the Jewish State, stop terror and release the Israeli hostages. Then will be possible to talk about other issues.

  5. Seeing how many radical Arabs view Israel as an European

"colony" on Islamic land, EU membership could be a PR nightmare for Israel.

  6. Sure, and while you are it why not include Australia and/or New Zealand?

  7. In principal great, in practice it would never work because israel will never give up until it has brought the Palestinians to their knees.  I do not even recognize israel (will not grace it with a capital) as a country, America and Britain had no right to 'give' that land to the Jews after WW2.  They just did not want the bother of displaced Jews so took the 'easy' option as they saw it!

  8. no

  9. The idea is not so bad, but those two nations are not "civilized" enough to be allowed in the EU, not to mention that they don't possess a GDP worthy of the troubles their inclusion could cost. May be I'm wrong but I think they'd just add fragmentation and insecurities. I agree with you they need a broker, and it could be the EU, but it should mediate without including them, at least not for the moment.
