Yeah, except for when they play Collingwood. The old SANFL guernsey is cool , but their AFL one is terrible.

I could be wrong but I think the rights of the Collingwood Football Club were even mentioned in the laws of ancient Rome.

There is imperial law still on the books that says anyone falsely claiming ownership of the black and white will finish up in the arena being fed to the Tigers.

No they should'nt,they joined the AFL from another league which already had a team with black and white stripes and if collingwood had of joined the S.A.N.F.L i would expect them to change their colours and for port to keep the b/w stripes,just good etiquette i think.

Unfortunately for Port Adelaide .. Collingwood already had the Nic- name of Magpies and wore the Black and white uniform. Given that Collingwood had been in what was the VFL since 1896 they had the right to maintain the uniform. Port is the *interloper* the newcomer and the tradition and history SHOULD be respected.

Had The VFL folded and the teams went off and joined the Sth Australian Football League .. THEN in my opinion .. Port would have had the right to maintain the Name MAGPIES and the black and white guernseys.. and Collingwood would have had to sacrifice theirs.

What COULD be a compromise is a Geelong/ Kangaroos  kind of thing .. Allow Collingwood to keep the vertical stripes and Port could switch to horizontal stripes .. with perhaps a lightening bolt across the front to indicate it's Port Power.

Our game is a very unique and fantastic game .. and it has such a rich and colourful history. I have a soft spot for all the old VFL teams .. ( with the exception of Carlton , and I have a deep loathing for them). I am a Dees supporter .. but I will always ( lol which in itself may sound like a contradiction) defend and support Collingwood ABOVE interstate teams. Collingwood is a part of the history of the games evolution ..

Anyway may 2007 be a great footy season..

Well said Deedubya! This question is one of absolute obscene blasphemy! The greatest, most successful team on the continent cannot - read, WILL not - give up its colours to some pissy team from a place that really is insignificant in the context of things. If they want to wear the black and white colours they can go back to the inferior SANFL and wear them to their heart's content, but it will not be tolerated in a league where the original "black and whites" are supposedly meant to surrender their guernseys which, mind you, have been with that club for their 115 years of existence. How long have Port Adelaide been around? Just over ten years? The Port Adelaide Power can kiss the proud, black and white, 115 year old arses of the Collingwood Magpies and keep their gruesome colours until they eventually deteriorate as a football club somewhere in the near future.

What a killer,Its funny that such a ridiculous question should be consided, but then again the authority that governs the competition, the AFL allows this absurd stupidity.   Mcdonalds wont allow "anyone" with the same name sell  hamburgers. So why the h**l should the AFL allow a new club, cash in on their MAJOR asset Collingwood, and allow them to wear the same colours, if black & white are.    Collingwood have  put more bums, so to speak,on seats than any other AFL club and thats actual fact at actual games before you even consider the Magpies Radio and Television audiences.   Then  add  the 50 something years Media promotion,of the VFL/AFL competition, between Lou Richards and Eddie McGuire, both Collingwood life members,and you have to ask what has pt-adelaide  done to deserve wearing  black and white  anyway , and the answer is ?

It's bad enough when Geelong plays North with both of them in blue and white. There is no need to have two sets of magpies (one is more than enough).

If we are to go with history, however, Port Adelaide formed in 1870 while Collingwood didn't appear for another 22 years. Port is the older club and should take precedence. If Port had been invited to join the AFL when the AFL was formed from the VFL then there would have been a real argument over who should wear black and white and be called the Magpies.

Collingwood got in first so Port has to give way but Collingwood supporters should be careful with their abuse of an older club.

No. Port Power are a seperate entity in the AFL, their colours are black white silver and teal. This is not because the AFL does not wish to have a team which wears black and white stripes, but because one existed prior to their admittance to the AFL
