Should Roma Sack Claudio Ranieri? (Part 2)
Ranieri’s tactics so far this season have been spot on. The blame for this poor run of results must entirely rest on the team. The defence lost its concentration at several critical moments, and the opposition made them pay dearly. Upfront, Francesco Totti
has been a child always whining and complaining of referees and teams parking the bus in front of the goal. For a champion of his stature, such things should not be hurdles, rather an added motivation to perform. In midfield, Daniele De Rossi has not looked
the world beater he was just two years back. David Pizaro, despite being less talented than the “il capitano future,” has been the start for the club. Perhaps De Rossi has lost faith in the Roma project. He knows he would have suitors running for his signatures,
if he decided to leave for newer pastures. However, that will never happen hopefully.
Even if Roma decides to let go of the coach, who would they turn to? The Italian press would tell you former Milan coach Leonardo and Marcello Lippi. Lippi simply lost the plot with Azzurri. His squad selections bordered on ridiculous choices at times, often
preferring old legs over youthful exuberance. Roma thankfully have faith in their youth system with Totti and De Rossi being proud youth products.
Moving on to Leonardo, the coach was disappointed with Milan President Berlusconi for failing to provide him with squad reinforcements. He did wonderful work earning Milan a Champions League birth with such depleted squad. It was Brazilian’s first year in
management, and he passed with flying colours. At just 41 years of age, the charismatic tactician has a world-class career ahead of him. A financially crippled and cash starved Roma, very much like the Milan of last season, will not be a good attraction. Also
he has stated recently that he would like to try his luck in the riches of Barclays Premiere League.
So, apart from the two, it’s difficult to identify any coaches of Roma’s calibre. Ranieri loves Roma with all his might. Throughout his career, he voiced his desire to coach the Roman club. Now that he is home finally, it would be a huge injustice replacing
him. Following Roma’s defeat to Brescia, the tactician appeared for the press conference in rage. The burning desire to succeed with the club was as clear as the day light. With De Rossi, Totti, Riise and Burdisso back in the squad, Roma will be a much stronger
side and will hopefully start clicking. A managerial change will plunge Roma in to further disarray. A change will player attitude will be welcome. A change of manager, not so much!
