Question:

Should Scotland be free?

I think it should, according to history, culture, ethnicity, and language(not so much language anymore). I know they speak English most of the time, but they are very proud people and most Scots I know want freedom. I also feel the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland should unite to free the old Ireland back and Wales should be liberated. Do you agree?

  1. It should be cheap, but not free.

  2. It's only a matter of time for Scotland and all of Ireland to be free.

It's in the best interest of all concerned, for the UK to be consigned to history.  England will be free also, to evolve politically and maybe get a constitution protecting the people.

!!! Welcome to the Scottish Republic !!!

  3. Personally, I feel it should be left up to the Scots, the Northern Irish, and the Welsh.

The issues aren't the same as they once were.  Times have changed.

(ETA:  And they are "free."  They have the exact same rights in the UK these days as the English do.)

  4. A more important freedom is freedom of choice.

Not all want Independence; many prefer inter-dependence.

And there are deeper freedoms that 'Independence' do not offer.

  5. free from what?

  6. It seems most Scots are happy with the devolved government, the Scottish Executive. Of course the Labour Party would collapse in Britain without the votes of their Scottish MP's on whom they rely to pass legislation. As for the Union of the Parliaments history has shown that this was brought about against the wishes of the Scots by politicians, aristocrats and intimidation. Alberto should remember that whilst the Scots may have done well out of the Union the English have done even better.

  7. The people should have the right to secede from the UK by referendum. I think there is a strong nationalist sentiment in Scotland but also a lot of unionists as well. This complicates things. The national question in Ireland is very complicated. One couldnt suggest an all Ireland referendum this would be bending the arms of unionism and lead to more voilence and most likely the unionist community would refuse to partake in it. It would have to be a referendum in the north passed by a high margin. If wales wants to secede this is fine as well by referendum.

People on this post might think that these are all a drain on the English economy. People probably thought this about Ireland too but today it is a resilient western economy thanks to good management. Scotland has its own natural resources which it could exploit at a loss to the rest of the uk, which wouldnt be so glad to see the back of them. Also it reorientated to Germany and France it would see the reduction of british power in their market which would also be a major loss. These are simple the snarls of petulant nationalists unable to accept the UKs new place in the world and moreover, that inspite of everything germany is now the greatest power in new Europe.

  8. yeah

  9. Of course I do.Westminster won't let go of the purse strings.Oil taxes for example.

  10. Very few Scots speak anything but English & they have made a very good living being part of Britain for the last couple of centuries. Let me ask you a question: how come now that the SNP are in power they are not proposing an immediate vote to try for full independence ? Why is that ? Could it possibly be that they know they would lose ? Scotland is not forced into anything it does not want. As an Englishman I am happy for them to go their own way but most Scots are happy with the status quo because they are part of one of the world's largest economies.

As for Ireland uniting... well, now you sound foolish. The Unionist majority in Northern Ireland wants to stay British & it will until the Republicans become the majority & vote to become part of Ireland. Even the Irish people accept this: they wish Ireland was united (I am speaking of my own friends in Ireland) but they know the wishes of the Unionists cannot just be ignored.

And Wales liberated... who pays for Wales ! This sounds like an anti English rant on your part & it just seems to lack any recognition of reality. The world is a bit more complicated than you seem to believe.

  11. Spoken like a typical American who hasn't a clue about the world outside his country's shores. Ok, I'll humour you-let's say we devolve the UK, and Scotland gets its independence along with Northern Ireland and Wales. However, we do it on condition that the USA gives back Nevada, California, Utah, New Mexico, most of Texas, plus a few bits of other states, all of which it annexed from Mexico a lot more recently than we did Scotland, Wales etc

The USA is the most imperialistic nation on the planet, and has been for quite some time...you just never hear about it from your compliant media and poor education system. Perhaps you should concentrate on freeing the nations where the USA has effected a "regime change" and booted out a democratically elected government in order to install a more US-interests friendly leader (hint, this has happened over thirty times since the end of WW2 alone)

  12. Sure, but who will pay for their giros?

  13. this is how i see it

if scotland leaves the united kingdom then northern ireland will probably become an independent state.the union will be made up of england and wales.

but, then again, what hope is there for nationalism within the e.u ?

tell the scots not to bother.look at ireland, they fight for 400 years for "freedom" and once they have it they hand it over to a bunch of faceless fascists.

the e.u is your enemy !!!

  14. Everyone should be free & have freedom.

    =)

  15. They're not free? In what way? Are they suffering? Do you mean, "independent"?

  16. Hoot Mon! -You'da thought it'd be so by now, if the Boys REALLY wanted it to be! :)

  17. Yes, and the Lucyland too.

  18. They made a free choice to join the Union for economic reasons, so were already free. And they can leave anytime they secure a democratic mandate for independence. All sounds pretty "free" to me ! That'd only upset the fascists who want all their own way right now. lol.

  19. Yes. Most Scottish people I know would love for their country to be independent. They should definitely be given a referendum for it. I don't really understand why anybody would try to deny them that opportunity. I believe that if Scotland got their independence Wales wouldn't be too far behind them. :-)

  20. Yes, I think Scotland should be free and devolution should also be granted to the Welsh, Irish and the Cornish.

  21. No.  As an American, who sees the benefits and value of the "melting pot" I just don't understand these various parts of the world where people in different ethnic groups feel the need to separate into their own countries.  I see how different people working together can have a synergy and do more together than they could possibly do separately.

  22. yes i agree these nations should be free.well i one im from the republic
