Question:

Should Silva stay at light heavyweight or move back down to middleweight?

I heard that Silva wants to move back down to middleweight to avoid Lyoto Machida, but he seem to be able to hold his own at light heavy. he could have a rematch with Dan Henderson at middleweight and possibly continue to dominate.

Any thoughts?

  1. Anderson and Lyoto are friends as well as team mates at blackhouse(Name of there camp which includes Big nog and diet nog)Also that he believes that the LHW belt belongs to Machida...But he didnt rule out fighting at 205 ever again like he previously had alot of ppl thinking

  2. He can easily go back and forth. DEFINITELY! No prob.

  3. He did say that his responsibilities are to defend his middleweight belt but that he also wants to be involved in the big fights whether it be at 185 or 205

  4. his exact quote (ok maybe not exact, but as it was translated) was that his duty is to protect the belt.  So that is what he is going to do for now!

  5. I think he will focus on 185 for the next yr and have one 185 defense before the end of the year and maybe 2 in 09.

Problem is 2 fights in 09 isnt enough for that guy, and theres no one setting 185 on fire to challenge him, he's going to fight Patrick Cote for god's sake. Okami is out there, rematch with hendo is out there, but then what?, Bisping? Marquardt lost so he will be a while before a rematch. There just doesnt seem to be enough guys at his level.

Where as 205 there is a wealth of guys who are great and would be phenominally huge paydays and entertaining fight, Liddell, and  W. Silva especially. I still think he will have at least one fight at 205 next year. If he wins he has to be in some kind of consideration for a title shot and if he wants to fight 4-5 times a year holding two belts isnt that big of a deal.

Only other big fight out there is GSP, I think GSP will have a super fight with BJ Penn before he has one with Silva, so if Penn beats him that shuts that door.

All in all I would love to see him take several fights at 205, there just isnt anyone at 185 that I think is close to him. I dont even know if there's many guys at 205 that are close to him but there is alot of guys who are closer anyway. I know he said he wants to stay at 185 but who is he gonna fight?.

also I dont think he is ducking Machida in anyway, he might not want to fight him because they are friends, just like him and Filho, but definately not ducking him.

  6. The only reason to avoid Lyoto is that they are first friends and teammates.  Lyoto has been working hard to get his 5-0 UFC record on top of his 13-0 total MMA record and Anderson knows that his popularity could keep his friend on the sidelines even longer if Anderson were to move permanently to 205.  Once Lyoto has had a chance at the 205 belt we may see Silva make the move to 205 in a more permanent role.  His fight against Irvin was only because Dana asked him to in order to slow the buy rates of the Affliction show on PPV the same night.

  7. Sylva fought Irvin as a favor and said repeatedly that he does not want to fight at 205.  He says he has no reason to move up and no desire to unite any belts or any other such thing.

Dana White / Zuffa put together the card with Silva at 205 so they could draw PPV buys away from Affliction's card that same night - no other reason.
