Question:

Should Stewart and Logano have been punished?

With the fines that were levied by NASCAR this week against JGR, do you think Stewart and Logano should have been punished? Do you think they were even 'in the know'? I don't think they were in on it and I don't think they should have been punished. All the other fines are good, and I like the fact the Joe himself is leveling fines against his own people.

Thoughts?

  1. It's all just a good old fashioned Witch Hunt.    Go check out the Dyno results from the Cup cars.   RCR and DEI should be punished now.  lol

  2. not a 20 fan at all, but I felt kind of bad that he got punished for something that he had no idea about.  however, if it gives his car an advantage, whether he knew about it or not, he should be punished.

logano has a bright future ahead, his point shaving wont really affect him very much this season

  3. I dont think they should be punished if they didnt know anything about the magnets. Nascar should just punish the people that knew about it.

  4. no but that's how it is

  5. Just my opinion but No the drivers were unaware and i feel not fair to them for points taken away...the other penalties, agreed, but i do believe it goes further than just those mentioned but being kept quiet..Witch Hunt AGREED!

  6. Even though they're not full timers in the series, Logano only being in the car about half the year, they can't make special punishments, or exceptions for part timers as opposed to full timers. I don't think they knew what the crew was doing. Stewart doesn't seem to be a very hands on driver, he lets the crew do what they get paid to do, and Joey probably wouldn't have been totally sure what was going on even if they did tell him. So I think the penalties were just and everyone will hopefully learn from it.

  7. Good question and a very nice insite.

Since the cars are not owned by the driver no.

How ever, the points taken away from the drivers do constitute a punishment.

Should they have been suspended?Only if they were the ones that authorized the magnetic shims to be used.

  8. Absolutely NOT!   The drivers should never be punished for what the crew does in the garage away from seeing eyes.  That goes for ANY driver not just Gibbs drivers.

  9. No, the drivers shouldn't have been punished, not because they didn't know, but because this violation did not take place during the race. Nascar is not there to determine who done it with what, when a team is in violation the whole team is punished by crew chief fines and suspensions and driver points/owner points being taken away. And up until this violation with the Gibbs #18 and #20 (Nationwide) I don't recall a violation for something that would have actually been a disadvantage during the race,  while trying to change the outcome of a dyno test. IMO because of the type of infraction I don't think the drivers needed to be punished. A better points penalty would have been to double up the owner's points penalty (to 300 from the 150). Had this infraction given the drivers an advantage during the race then yes driver penalties should always be incurred, but again this type of infraction would have put the car at a serious disadvantage during the race. Again this is just my opinion.
