Just asking, because I will be attending a high school with IB program soon, therefore I don't know if video games and TV will interfere with my marks. PLEASE ANSWER WITH LOGICAL THOUGHTS!

  1. Hi Matthew,

Moderation is key.  If you enjoy video games and TV, then make a bit of time for them, but make sure that you don't use them so much they interfere with your studies.  If you don't give yourself some time for you, you may find that you burn out.  If you don't feel you can moderate it, talk about a plan with your parents and have them help you.

    Good luck in IB!

  2. If you are a serious student, and if you are working as hard as you can in college level classes, then you probably should limit your time with video games. But I have also seen kids who were in high level classes overstress on work. You need to learn to budget your time. But you also need to learn to take a break from working. Learning to control the timetable and to work consistently is probably one of the hardest things you can do.

  3. I agree with the moderation.  Sometimes I have to unplug my TV if I find myself avoiding my work.  I teach at a school with an IB program.  It all simply depends on if you want to make A's and stay competitive, or earn C's, just so you can have IB on your diploma.

You know what distracts you, so solve the issue now.  If you have to ask this question, then you need to make sure the games and DVD players are NOT in your bedroom, and ask you folks for help on regulating your use of them during the school year.

  4. Everything in moderation.

If you know its a problem for you, then move it out of your room.

If you cant stick to a study schedule - then itll be a problem.

Here is what Bill Gates said about his upbringing:

"We didn't get to watch TV on weeknights. We were encouraged to get good grades. Our parents talked a lot about the challenges they were dealing with and treated us as though we could understand and appreciate those things. My parents took us around and traveled some. When we were young our grandparents read to us a lot, so we got into the habit of reading"

    and about TV now?

"I don't have any TVs with their over-the-air receivers connected in my house"

why wouldnt the third richest man in the world watch some tv? perhaps it distrcts him from what he finds important? That really says something.
