Should There Be An Age MAXIMUM for driving?

Everyone knows you have to be 16 in most places to legally drive. Should there be a limit on the other end? A lot of teenagers are known for driving fast while a lot of senior citizens slow. Do you believe that after a certain age, people shouldn't be allowed to drive anymore? Say maybe 68? I don't think they should take their license away, but I do believe that maybe every year or two, after the age of 65, people should be required to take a driving test just to check that they still have their wits and vision about them. This might prevent many accidents. I also believe that drivers should be checked for once or twice for the first few years after driving just to see that they are doing it correctly.

  1. No!!!!

The idea of having tests or checks on people if they drive correctly sounds good, but that wouldnt be cost efficient and most likely wouldn't make any difference. Some people still drive even if their licenses have been revoked

  2. There shouldn't be an age maximum.  There are people who are 60 who shouldnt be driving, yet i've meet an 80 year old who still seems like he's 50.  People age differently, and there's no good way to put a max age.  Besides, public transportation for some areas are so bad or non existent that it would be stupid to not let elderly drive, especially for emergencies.  It also depends on where they are driving, if they're from a small rural area or driving on highways in big cities.  That would make a huge difference in safety.

  3. I don't believe that there should be a set maximum driving age, but I do believe that all drivers before they can get their drivers license renewed should have to get a strict physical completed and retake both the knowledge and more lengthy skills test so the state can weed out drivers that are a hazard to themselves and others.

I personally don't know about other states, but PA's skills driving test is pathetically short, maybe 3 miles, and (in my opinion) barely covers the basics of driving.  Have the skills test go through real-world situations like city and highway traffic, have it go through a test course to test the drivers' reactions to having a fake pedestrian or animal "jump" out in front of them at random to test their reactions to make sure they react acceptably to in real world situation.  Above all, drivers' education classes and courses should be mandated.

  4. why not retest everyone who has a charged accident no matter their age

  5. i think the age should be 80

  6. Rather than place and arbitrary age limit on the license,  I would prefer to see required skills  tests after a certain age.   And yes,   it may prevent many accidents such as the old folks putting it into gear and driving through the store front.     You also have a very good idea about retesting after a few years,  but if you think the lines at the  DMV are  long now.......!

As a side note,  approx. 30 years ago I worked at a supermarket.   One of our regular customers was an old man who drove an mid-60s Chevrolet.   One nice day,  he pulled into a lot directly in front of the store and did his shopping, following the list his wife sent along.   After  I loaded his purchases into the back seat of the car,  I was coming out the door with my next customer,  and saw this fellow attempt to back out of the spot,  6 times or more,  never turning his head or checking mirrors,  and hitting the same car parked behind him each time.   Police were called,  he shopped with a daughter in the future.

  7. Yes and they should do it for everyone every two years, whats good for the older is just as good for the younger as well.

  8. you get retested every few years anyway at the DMV when you go to renew your license, so there is no need for a limit.  Also, older drivers are by far the best since they have the most experience.  The driving age should actually be moved up, so as to avoid more accidents.  Driving too slow shows your caution.
