From a 1953 speech from the guy that knew how much it costed to win WWII

D.D.Eisenhower

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals.

It is some 50 miles of concrete highway. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. These plain and cruel truths define the peril and point to the hope that comes with this spring of 1953.

This is one of those times in the affairs of nations when the gravest choices must be made, if there is to be a turning toward a just and lasting peace. It is a moment that calls upon the governments of the world to speak their intentions with simplicity and with honesty. It calls upon them to answer the questions that stirs the hearts of all sane men: is there no other way the world may live?

  1. On the Federal level, a higher %.

But the Federal budget as a whole should also be much, much lower.

  2. The federal government should spend 95% on military. That is the primary goal of the federal government. The entire federal government should be taken to 15% of what it is though.

If people want government to take money from the most successful and give to the least successful, they should do that on the state level so that I can move to another state.

  3. Modern day republicans are proud of the fact that the US is responsible for 47% of global military spending and that we police the world.

The military budget could easily be reduced by 20% which would save us roughly $110 billion.

  4. Republicans today are merely the Democrat slave-holders of the South before the Civil War mixed with the Democrat War Hawks of the 1960's (cf. Lyndon B. Johnson, who severely escalated the Vietnam War). The Democratic Party has been progressive, constantly changing. They've come along way, but the Republicans have been regressing, getting worse and worse. That's why Republicans today are moving towards Democrats who wanted slavery to exist in the 1800's.

I say we should cut the military spending, but not too much, lest we endanger ourselves.

  5. No, but given the choice I'll take that instead of spending it on the welfare/deadbeat complex.

  6. We should follow the US Constitution . No one has invaded the US . All else is the fascists building a new world empire .
