Should Universities be allowed to adopt religions and ideologies?

Thomas Zambito, Daily News Staff Writer reports as follows:-

Lawyer Roy Den Hollander has sued Columbia University, accusing it of turning feminism into the school's religion - and teaching that men are "the primary cause for most, if not all, the world's ills." Hollander says Columbia discriminates against men by teaching a doctrine that scapegoats men for all of history's troubles.

In a suit filed in Manhattan Federal Court, he complains that the Ivy League school in Morningside Heights uses federal money to fund a "religionist belief system called feminism." The class-action suit argues that Columbia's women's studies program demonizes men and exalts women to justify discrimination against men based on collective guilt. The civil rights suit is the latest in a Hollander-led campaign attacking the alleged infringement of men's rights.

Hollander, a self-described anti-feminist, has also sued city nightclubs for discriminating against men by charging them more on discount ladies' nights. Hollander is suing to recover damages on behalf of current and former male students.

Columbia should offer equivalent programs for men, he said. Also named as defendants are the federal and state governments, which provide funding to run the campus' women's studies programs. He refused to give his age, claiming it would hinder his chances of picking up younger women at city nightspots. "I'm always running into women who think I'm younger than I am, so I don't want to disillusion them," Hollander noted.

A Columbia spokesman declined to comment.

  1. His lawsuit is going to get thrown out.

  2. To those of you who want to get rid of "Women's Studies", would you also support getting rid of "Black Studies", which many universities also have?

  3. At one time, all universities actually were religious insitutions or heavily influenced by religion (Oxford and cambridge both started that way), and many still are (such as the Brigham Young University).

If they can teach that c**p, why not Women's Studies. At least people might learn something they haven't heard two zillion times before.

Anyway, if you read the story, this guy is a fruitcake, certainly NOT a poster boy most blokes would want.

    Cheers :-)

  4. I read the article and he didn't present any evidence that this is actually what goes on in Columbia's women's studies program. It's just an assumption. If he was right, then of course it would be unacceptable, but it would hardly merit a lawsuit. This guy sounds like he's taking full advantage of how overly litigious America has become.

  5. This guy is cool! Good to know there is someone playing feminism at their own game.

Btw  He is totally correct about Women's Studies. They are totally unlike any other discipline you will find at university. I studied two gender modules as an undergrad and I can tell you that questioning of the feminist material was not encouraged. I have read that often WS courses are more or less run like group therapy where women are encouraged to share their painful experiences of being a woman in a 'patriarchal culture'; this is more like what happens in a cult than a classroom.

Anybody defending WS as an academic subject has just jettisoned any academic credibility they might otherwise have, and anyone moving to get rid of these propaganda courses from campuses is only to be applauded.

  6. The guy is a joker, a real life GWS troll, but I agree, I hope this sets a precedent, we cannot have schools demonising men anymore than we can have schools demonising any other group.

    Feminists should be marginalised.
