Should a 2006 Honda 4 Stroke Outboard engine produce smoke?

I'm thinking of bidding on a 2006 2HP Honda 4 Stroke Outboard engine on ebay - The guy has filmed it running here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZBgD1AU0xU - The trouble is I assumed that 4 stroke engines don't produce any smoke, or very little. This one seems to produce almost as much as my old 2 stroke seagull !! is there a problem with this engine or is that a normal amount of smoke from a Honda 4 stroke?

  1. If smoke it would of come over the top of the tank>That's exhaust & it's it gear>With the prop turning> Does it have a netural or direct drive?????

  2. That does not look like smoke, but rather after a few minutes running it looks like steam. There is not alot of cooling water in a garbage can.

  3. why would you buy an engine sight unseen. you are taking a big risk anytime you buy without personally testing each and every feature. it's your money but dont say you were not warned. ebay is not a reliable source. what if it's been used in saltwater and the interior is corroded?

  4. hi this is not smoke its steam on the back of your engine there is a bit of dripping water this should be a strong jet! this takes water from the bottom of the leg of the engine cools the engine then ejects it where the drip is. the best way to solve this is to 'back flush' the cooling system (just stick a hose with a strong jet up against the small hole where the water is dripping from0 be careful you could get wet! i had the same problem with my old outboard engine so email if you need any more help.

  5. I didn't watch the film, but to answer your question about a 4 stroke engine---No a 4 stroke outboard is the same as the engine in your car or truck and should not smoke at all. If it does it has internal wear.

  6. 4 stroke engines produces less smoke than the 2 strokes because the 4 stroke  has more efficiency and thanks to that consumes less fuel too

  7. Not watching the film, but in general 4 strokes should produce no smoke at all - they aren't supposed to burn oil.

  8. It isn't smoking. That is the water all stirred up by the prop. Also the exhaust coming out aerates the water around the prop.
