I have a 14' jonboat. I bought a plug that has a rubber boot and a brass hoop. As you tighten the brass hoop it expands the rubber boot. Should i put this plug on the inside of the boat or on the outside? Seems to me it would be easier on the outside but i thought i would ask.

  1. Perhaps it can go either or...talk to a sales person at ur local marina to be sure...I'd put it on the outside myself...but that's not sayin much. lol

  2. definitely inside.if you take on water you can pull the plug while the boat is moving and it will drain. outside could catch on something and well you know the rest.

  3. Oh my God.  What moron puts the plug inside?  The water is trying to get IN, and pushes the plug.  If you're worried about a snag, tie a cord to the plug and secure it inside the boat.  This helps to keep from misplacing it as well  INSIDE?  Geesh.

  4. outside

  5. Inside. It may not be as easy, but that's where it belongs.

  6. The plug should go on the inside. I have had several boats and the only ones that have gone from the outside in are like the one I have now where it uses a brass pipe plug or when I had my I/O and you couldn't even see where the plug went. It had a similar plug to what you have but you would put the plug in the hole and tighten two ears until the plug was tight and had no chance of being pulled out. That does not sound like the type of plug that you have.

  7. My boat plug screws in from the ouside of the boat, and I would think this makes more sense for 1 very important reason:  since boat plugs are UNDER the water line, all of the pressure on the hull from displacement is trying to push into the boat, its pushing inward on the hull, trying to fill the boat all the time!  So, a plug is more likely to TIGHTEN as its pushed INTO its plug hole, not OUT of the plug hole from the inside.

Not to judge people, but you gotta love that answer about how if your hull takes on water, you can drain it out by removing your boat plug!?  Do me a favor, NEVER try that, at least not with me on the boat!  Remind me not to go sailing with that guy.....

  8. Inside!!!
