I have been to the orthopedic about back problems and have some disc problems, but they havnt really done anything for me. All they said to do was build up my core, so I started boxing again and mixed martial arts(a lot of wrestling). My back was feeling a lot better for a while then it has started to hurt bad again for the past 5 days and i didnt do anything while working out or training that i know of. Do you think as a fighter i need to see a Chiropractor?, or will it just make it worse as i work out hard. I just dont want it to keep coming out of place.

  1. no one should go to a chiropractor.

you do need to build up your core, you might not be doing it in the right way.

everyone I've ever known who went to a chiropractor has said that the problem with it is that it makes you "feel" good in the short term, but in the long run if you don't keep going, you could get worse- plus, if you go to a crappy chiro, they can s***w you up for life.

stick with stregthening your core- you should be doing five different sets of core excercises to hit five different areas of your core/abs/lower back.

if you are having pain when you lift in your other excercies lower the weight till you have done some serious "core" workouts and feel comfortable.

people often neglect thier abs/lowerback in favor of jumping right in and doing squats/bench/deadlift, etc. but your core has an effect on everything you do and will improve your lifts in other excersices as well as provide you more support.

if there is still a problem then see your orthopedic physician.  At least your doc isn't jumpting to surgery which is a death knell (for working out) for many athletes and athletic people.

  2. Yes, you definitely should. A lot of people don't understand how chiropractic care works. It's like brushing your teeth; gunk always builds on your teeth and damage is constantly being done to your body. You've got to keep removing gunk/damage. It's not a one-time deal.

However, it is defintely worth it. Some people say that they feel good at first, then feel worse if they don't go in for a while. That's just like asthematics don't realize how much they need their inhalers until they've hand one. If you're used to a certain level of discomfort and take it for granted, you won't notice how pesky it is until you've had it relieved.

Find a chiropractic office that will offer continuous treament, and not just short term. You will find it helpful in the long run. Plus, if you hurt anything else, you can ask them to adjust it for you. They often help me with my injured ankle or my elbow when it gets hyper extended.

  3. it will help with your grappling a lot, chiropractic care will strengthen your entire back as well as make you healthier in the long run. If you keep going your peformance will start to get way better.

  4. Yes it will definitely help.
