Some people on G&WS seem to think this is a good idea http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atji53mtmzj8F_t8Cq9KplTsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080611132721AAgc58e

Do you think the laws should be changed in your country so that men who insult their wives, partners, sisters etc should be thrown in jail?

  1. No lol...women do exactly the same thing n sometimes men are jst that daft they dont realise when theyve insulted a partner.

  2. i think some feminism is going to far.. it doesnt make and sense that if i insult my wife i can go to jail and if she insults me its... go girl go!... i think if the women is that scared it should jsut be a restraining order... then if he breaks that to insult her then he should go to jail.. maybe i duno?

  3. We should study these laws properly and see if this is in fact the case, if so the laws are taking it too far. I doubt there is any existing law that sends men to jail for insulting their wives, I need to see a real case of that first before I believe it. However, ongoing continual insulting (mental abuse), does need to be checked and I know for a fact this happens all over the world, we can't deny that.

Should we send a man or woman to jail for occassional insulting? - That's rediculous, besides it's never going to happen, our jails are way too full already for that!

I think a better solution for wife abuse would be for the courts to hand them both a set of boxing gloves and stick them in a ring with a referee, let them have it out good and proper, once and for all. Even if the wife loses, she at least would get a legal chance to get in one or two good shots, maybe even watch him drop once or twice.

When I was 9 months pregnant, my ex-husband accused me of sleeping with my uncle who I did not even like. I was a house wife then and never even went out of the house, much less visited anybody with my full stomach. I also had one leg, which I lost when I was two in a bus accident. After taking all the still cooking food out of the oven (stove) and smashing it on the floor, he grabbed me by my hair and smashed my face against the basin in the bathroom, then he had me on the floor, kicking me with his work steel-tipped boots in the face and in my body (which I somehow managed to protect my unborn baby). Then we were standing again and somehow I drew strength from God and gave him the hardest back-hand across his face that I could muster and he dropped to the floor for a few seconds. Those few seconds that he dropped showed me that I'm not a complete victim. Even though he got up and gave it to me properly after that, I didn't care and felt nothing after that except full elation for having shown him I can strike back too.

Im pleased to say that my son was born soon after, healthy and well loved and cared for by me.

  4. No.  That's asinine.

  5. NO!!!

  6. No, but many of the feminist youth support draconian and gender biased ideas.

  7. This law already exists in my country, and is already being misused:

He shouldn't go to jail for that. We all lose our cool sometimes. Women in my family are more likely to lose their cool, actually. What happened to freedom of speech for men?

Yes, the laws need changing, but not in that way. My country lacks adequate law enforcement, not laws, which is what feminists fail to grasp. Or maybe they've grasped it long ago, but punishing men mattered more than protecting women.

  8. This isn't simply about insults. They are verbally abusing their wives. They are upset that the womans family isn't paying men enought to marry their daughters. It is completely rediculous that men think its ok to treat women like dirt and say such hateful and crude things to them. What do you have against woment being loved instead of payed for like some stupid prostitute. Why is it wrong to insult a man but perfedtly ok to insult a woman. Most verbal abuse such as name calling (Which is not something I got out of the article at all) lead to much worse abuses. When men insult men that is just one step closer to physically abusing and raping women. Why do you think it is ok for men to abuse women and all fashions? Verbal abuse only shows you disrespectful to women and any man who would disrespect the women in his life is no different from someone who is going to physically or sexually abuse women.

  9. Yeah, it's justice.

  10. I think that we would all be in jail then wouldn't we.

I think they should first try to put all the rapists and murderers still on the streets in jail before they start targeting poor Joe who said his wife had a fat ***.

  11. Going to jail for verbally insulting someone? NO..

It's not nice, but its not a jailable offense in my opinion..~

  12. No, that's ridiculous!

If a  man insults anyone in his family, they can just insult him back, there's no need for laws against it!

  13. If it came down to a war of beliefs, I'd fight to death for my right to call any man or woman anything I d**n well think of them. I don't care what label you fall under, feminist or not, nothing grants you the ability to take that right away. Millions of people gave their lives to win and protect our freedom of speech and its here to stay.

  14. What a silly notion.  Should my wife go to jail for insulting me?  I doubt it.

If you are an adult, you should really be able to take a harsh word now and then.

  15. No.

  16. I am a married man and I live in India.  We dont have a strong feminist presence in our society and India has the second largest population of muslims in the world.  We are one fifth of the entire human race on this planet.

But I thank you American feminists.  Thank you for nothing.  We look up to you for direction and enlightenment.

  17. If She wants him to , yes. It should be up to the Female.

  18. No.

They taught this little rhyme when I was in primary school...I can't quite remember it but it had something to do with sticks and stones.

  19. ****, I hope not.  I'd be a lifer then.

  20. NO, come on when people get upset they say things they don't mean. if this was the case for EVERYONE. I would be in jail more then anyone. after what I say to my parents I Love them but again people say things they don't mean.

This would be bad. and NOT only Men should go we should all go. but again NO God Bless

  21. No...I do not think a person should go to jail for insulting a family member and just beacuase it's a female makes no difference!!

Thank God I live in America where there is no such law (and I am a female saying this). I can defend myself should someone insult me (with words) and don't need the law to do it for me. Besides, if a family member/relative insults me, maybe I deserved it and should put myself in check and change my ways.

  22. if that were the case, i'll be on death row.

  23. What?! are you insane? First of all thats sexist. I don't know where you come from but in america if you think your wife or family member is horrible, ugly, fat, stupid, or whatever, you have the right to express it.

  24. No, that's crazy.

A man who insults his wife is a jerk, but being a jerk is not illegal.

  25. Are you serious? Jail time for having a big mouth? That's your right as an American!! You can say any asinine thing you want!! You may be lonely after a while, but long live free speech!!!!!

  26. I don't think they meant the occasional insult.  The wording may be extreme in the law and not definitive enough, but I think they meant to cover real, constant verbal and psychological abuse.  Not "That's an ugly blouse".

Let's remember where this is taking place.  Women are still treated horribly in other parts of the world.  Do you think it's OK if women are killed or abused - physically or verbally - because the dowry was too low?  This law is meant to help women in that position.    It's aimed at men, probably because in that country, most cases of abuse are perpetrated by the man.  Ever thought of that?  That maybe, if men in those countries stop beating and killing their wives or female relatives, they wouldn't need laws that send them to jail.

  27. These aren't mere insults they are threats and intimidation.    I think you need to go back and reread the article about the real abuse.  You apparently think the law should be revoked for those items alone - according to you its okay to threaten to burn your bride.
