Should a tooth still hurt four days after being filled?

This has never happened to me before and I wonder if the dentist did something wrong and if it will stop.

Thanks to those who answered my question on a root canal.

  1. no it shouldn't. Go back to your dentist.

  2. It is possible that it has developed an irreversible pulpitis....If the decay was close to the pulp (nerve) of the tooth, it is sometimes unable to recover with just a filling and then will need a root canal...

As the tooth is in a human body, these situations are uncontrollable and the filling is the first step....if there was no pain...then it was done!

But now that the pain is present, it is another sign that the decay was deeper than hoped....

  3. Has it been root filled?

If so, it *might* but really, after 4 days, you would expect some degree of lessening pain. If it wasn't root filled, the dentist may have gone quite close to the nerve and it might have irritated it.

I would advocate you going to the on-call dental surgeon in your area, if nothing else, it will give you a second opinion on the filling and you might be able to get this resolved.

What material is it filled with by the way?

  4. no i dont think it should, there may be an abcess under the filling that happened to my sister. try calling your dentist
