Question:

Should a wood stain leave marks on hands / cloth after being "sealed" with wax? How do I stop it doing this?

I bought a wooden handmade trunk which was stained then sealed with wax.

Running my hands over it I noticed stain on my hands, then stain on a cloth rubbed over it too. Should it be doing this? Can I do anything to stop it rubbing off as it's to be used for linen storage!!?

Thanks

  1. It doesn't sound as if it was sealed.  Wax doesn't seal it just covers and protects.  It could be the wax wasn't polished enough so it didn't harden properly. You might  just try to "polish" the wood or that is to rub off the excess wax to a hard finish.  Then the only wax left will no longer rub off.

What you need to do is seal the wood with a good wood sealer.  Polyurethane is on example varnish is another.  But you would need to get the wax off before you could use a product like that.
