  1. In most cases, two and three letter words are lower case, while all others are upper case. Department for Transportation would be DfT. DFT would also be proper, Dft is not proper. We also sometimes drop small words. The United States of America is U.S.A., not U.S. of A. or USoA.

The Department of Motor Vehicles is DMV. In the U.S., the Department of Transportation is DOT. Now, try the Navy, The Commander of the Pacific Fleet is CNCPF (Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet) and the commander of the Air Force for the same area is CNCPACAF (Commander in Chief, Pacific Air Forces).

    HTH (hope this helps)

  2. The example you gave is not an abbreviation, it is an acronym.

An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word, of which there are several types i.e. Interpol, Prof. Dr. Rt. Hon. (for The Right Honorable), St.

An acronym is like the example you gave, where letters stand for a word, i.e. BBC (British Broadcasting Association), NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), UN (United Nations).

But yes, it would be capitalised.

  3. Generally, every letter is capitalized.

  4. it should be in a capital letter
