Accidents, lawlessnes including speeding, running red lights and stop signs, weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating, driving too slow, illegal turns, talking on the cell phone, blowing crosswalks, hitting kids, illegal parking, etc. etc. etc.

Before you point out the sliver in your brother's eye, look at the log in your own.

  1. Motor vehicles, like guns, are almost never at fault as the cause of death,  injury and destruction, because they do not operate by themselves. But under the control (or lack thereof) of a human, when a motor vehicle is not used properly, it can be lethal.

  2. Do you have a question for us?

  3. Absolutely! Mass transportation.

More walking, more fresh air, better health, improved communities and communications within them, less crime and nature would start to come back on those unused roadways.....I could go on all day.

It's quite logically the only hope for the survival of the species. But it won't happen until things get a lot worse:(

Incidentally, it's not necessary to have countless huge, privately owned SUVs transporting one person to the gym for us to have food delivered to our towns. A few trucks or trains would do it just fine and the food would get to us a lot sooner and fresher!

We think our cars make us more "free". Fact is, they enslave us. I've lived without a car (gasp!). It takes a while to get used to but it's well worth it.

  4. no. drivers just need to be more careful. but accidents will always happen. even in the days of horse and buggies there were accidents (my late gramms was in one, she and her fiance landed in a ditch!) besides we need to move food and merchandise from place to place and that would be difficult to do without trucks.

  5. I drive a motorbike so ban both cars and push bikes!

This has many benefits: Firstly if we were all on bikes we could remove congestion completely, most commuters drive to work on their own anyway, parking spaces would be abundant, most of the risks of bikes would be removed (i.e. people in cars), it would help preserve petrol stocks and improve the environment.

Ok, in bad weather it might not be so feasible (downright dangerous in fact), motorbikes are inherently dangerous (but on the plus side for any fans for evolution we would evolve to be better drivers), and they are not as versatile as cars.

I think it is worth considering!

  6. Be careful what you ask for?  With the current gas price situation, I would not be surprised to see someone somewhere propose this into law.

  7. What are you talking about?  Ban automobiles because bad things occasionally happen?  Good luck getting food transported to your town with automobiles banned.

  8. No argument that these instances happen, but frankly is banning vehicles from the road the ultimate solution. Yes all of the cases that you stated would cease to exist do to the fact that there are no vehicles on the road, but what of the rest of the economy that would be hit. How would goods be transported from a manufacture to the retailer and obviously there are hundreds of other examples. The only thing that really can be done is policing of the bad and negligent drivers and hope that they grow up and that people will start to drive more responsibly.
