Do you feel that African Americans need unique names for ethnic pride like Germans, Italians, etc.

If no, why

  1. Why should I? I'm not really interested in "ethnic pride," because who am isn't defined by who my ancestors were. I were to name a child, it wouldn't matter where the name came from,

  2. should, no...its up to the parents. they should name their kids whatever they want. Also a name doesn't mean that you're proud of your ethnic. my mother's name is alice and fathers name is andrew, they are black and they are so proud of who they are.

  3. White folks like it because they immediately know the race of someone named Keshonda or Shaniqua without even seeing them.  This is how & why your resumes get tossed in the trash.

God forbid!  If you were black and named Susan, you might mistakenly get called in for an interview.

I'm just telling you the way it is.  We ALL know it isn't right or fair.  But that's the way it is!

  4. I think people need to mind their own business.

  5. what ppl name their children is their business

  6. Rocky is right about the risk of African American sounding names.

I have no problem with African American 'unique' names.  Wear 'em with pride.
