  1. I think you should be graded up, but not down for class participation.  If a student understands everything that is being taught, and is getting an "A" in the course, why should he or she be marked down because they don't raise their hand to answer a question?  Some people are just more shy.  On the other hand, let's say a student is at a high "B" and wants to move up to an "A".  If that student shows that they want to move their grade up by participating, then I'd be willing to give them a few extra participation points.

I say use class participation as a way to help, not hurt, your grade.

  2. If it is graded, it should only be by a small percent.

I had recieved all As on tests and homework in literature, and I got a B on my report card. When I asked my teacher why that was, she said I "didn't raise my hand enough".

    What the?!

I felt a little jipped....but I guess I can't do much about it then, huh?

  3. I think it obviously depends on the course, teacher, and class (group of students)... However, in general, I think that participation is an important part of any class. Students learn a lot more from an interactive discussion that they do from the teacher lecturing to them. If there is no participation from the class, then it is difficult to have an effective discussion. Furthermore, requiring everyone to participate means that everyone has to be part of the lesson. Everyone's opinions should be included or you end up with that one smart kid doing all the talking. If only one student participates then it really isn't any different than a lecture from the teacher- just one person doing all the talking!

  4. Yes, but only if the teacher lets you know that you will be graded on it. Class discussion is a valuable teaching tool and it can also ensure educators that our students are staying awake during class.
