Question:

Should device be plugged into the audio receiver OR the TV in a home theatre?

I just bought a new 42 inch plasma and receiver with speakers package.

The TV has 3 HDMI ports and the receiver has a bunch of HDMI and other ports. They both have audio digital slots.

Should I connect my TV up to the receiver with a digital audio connection and then plug all my devices (e.g. cable box, PS3, DVD player) into the TV OR should I plug all my devices into the receiver?

I'm getting conflicting advice on which way to go.

(Note that I want it to work so that when I change the the video source on my TV (e.g. to switch from TV to my PS3), the speaker system automatically changes also (i.e. I don't want to have to change the video source on my TV and then also press a separate button on the speaker system controller to switch the audio)).

Thanks for any advice.

  1. You pretty much answered your own question. Given what you want todo re switching, connect the various sources to the receiver and the receiver to the TV. If you use HDMI you get video and audio on the one input. The sound should be amplified and sent to speakers by the receiver, and the vidio sent on via a 2nd HDMI cable to the HDTV. Switching input sources on the receiver will select the input device seen and heard.
