Question:

Should every department in a business be equally important?

I work in a casino and the owner / general manager told my bosses that the department I work in is not as important as the other departments here. To prove his point he gave every department except the one I work in 50 cent raises. My department I work in is all war veterans from Vietnam, Korea and Iraq / Afghanistan. Is there anything I can do about this? Please help I definitely need help on this situation.

  1. It's perfectly legal and he's absolutely right.  Not all departments are equally important.  It is your right to leave and find a new job.

  2. Your owner/manager is basing his decision on the amount of revenue each department generates.  Apparently this is all that is important to him.

He obviously does not consider he has any civic duty in being fair to all.  After all, war veterans are important, they were busy fighting for their country whilst he was coining the money.

He should realise that each department has its strengths and that to have a well rounded business, all are important.

Not a lot you can do about this attitude  because if you told him that I suspect you would soon be out of the door.

Bide your time.  If you are really discontented then quietly do your own research in looking for another job.

  3. No it's not a democracy. I'm a Iraq vet but I'm also a business man. Most likely in your company- just like every other sales is the most important. It's where the money comes from. Even more important then making the product. I can sell something that hasn't been built yet! Thats just a fact. Sorry
