Question:

Should everyone go to college?

If so, who will be left to do the menial work? Will a college graduate be willing to wash dishes, wait tables, dig ditches, or pick up trash for a living? Or would they feel too privileged? Shouldn't we keep up or even increase our standards for excellence in education?

Then you can look at some of the most successful people in the world, and some of them didn't even finish college. Bill Gates rings a bell.

I am not down on education, but I think it is unrealistic to think that everyone should go to college. We need to get back to basics of what a High School Diploma used to mean. It used to mean a well rounded education.

What does everyone else think?

  1. College is part of the system that keeps you down! **** college!  I am in college and we just learn from the book I might as well have read the ******* book myself.  It is useless and a waste of money, don't go!

  2. Agree with first answerer,

    college isn't for everyone.

Some people need those four years (or more, depending) to figure out what they want to be, some are lucky and already know what they want to do.

  3. Michael Dell didn't finish college either.  Going to college just confirms that you are trainable. No, college is not for everyone, and not all college graduates are successful.

  4. Well even if everyone in the country had a PHd if there were no jobs available they would still be forced to do work a lot of people consider lower than them to pay the bills.

Personally I think thats a dumb way of thinking. I mean having a job no matter how low is still better than having no job at all.

  5. You're making an argument for a slave class in society.

I have ethical problems with that.

Education doesn't just mean higher wages - it produces better people, people that have learned to think and constantly learn and adapt to a changing world.

The more educated a population is, the lower the crime rate, the more involved they are in politics and the better the standard of living is for everyone.

You can design robots to do the menial work.

  6. No, everyone should not go to college.

  7. More young Americans need to be apprentice trained in skilled work in all skilled employment industries. This requires hands on working and further education to become qualified in many skilled industries. Obtaining a professional trade in skilled work.

The USA has a shortage of plumbers, electricians, builders, mechanics, welders, boilermakers, nurses, teachers,  aged, child and disability care workers, repair service personnel, painters, chefs, bakers, brick layers, technicians, landscape gardeners, telecommunications, repairs and operators, etc etc etc.

Over the last eight years the young Americans who would take on these apprenticeships haven't by joining the armed services. By the time they finish their service, they are too old to take on a four year apprenticeship or would accept apprentice wages until they are 24/26 years old or live at home with their parents. So this has caused a great shortfall in the numbers of qualified apprentice trained skilled workers in all industries.

Many US companies and business's now advertise for overseas skilled workers or are closing there doors, moving overseas to countries where they can get skilled workers. So there is a need for young Americans leaving school to be further educated to be apprentice trained in these skilled work industries. Which all do require further education during their four year apprenticeship training, to become a licenced skilled worker.

Otherwise the only work young Americans will have in the future is work in security, police force, remain in the military or flipping hamburgers,  washing dishes, waiting on tables, digging ditches, picking fruit or cotton or picking up trash for a living. As more US companies and business's have to hire overseas workers to fill the skilled employment positions in all industries or leave the USA.

Sooner or later the Americans who are currently employed in these positions will retire or leave the US, overseas to where the job are.

  8. no

If schools would do away with things other than academics and practical career  training well educated adults could be produced for far less than we spend today.  This would reduce the need for collage for a lot of kids.

I think persons who fail to advance in school should go to a job training program.  These future dropouts would just be out of the system sooner and save billions of dollars.

On the other side collage should be free for those with higher ACT sat scores, maybe the top 10 -15%

  9. Let's be real, a college education today does NOT mean someone is educated, it just means they sat through a few more semesters of lectures and testing.  My daughter-in-law is a bright young woman who has a Master's degree in education, and when she meets someone for the first time one of her questions is "What's your sign?"  So much for higher learning and critical thinking.
