Should fat airline passengers have to buy 2 seats?

Let's measure them! how degrading would that be! lol.

If you take up 2 seats you should have to pay for 2 seats. Not fair to make me share my seat with a fat person.

  1. I think they should just make over sized seats for overweight people and make the price a little higher than the average.

  2. Thats really mean...but kinda funny. lol

  3. I believe that if you are over a certain weight that the airline can require you to purchase an extra seat. This is no joke. Either that or they can ask you to leave the plane.

  4. Yes obese people should have to buy two seats if they need it. It is unfair for the person they are seating beside.

  5. If you're a healthy person why are you wasting your time with unhealthy behaviors?

  6. We would first have to define the word 'fat' here. Surely, there are varying degrees of fatness. It depends on how fat the person is, how full the flight is, and the overall situation.

If they are so fat that they take up two seats, then they should pay half for the next seat.

One person who weighs 150 pays for one seat, and two persons who weigh 150x2=300 lbs would pay for two seats, so if one person weighs 300 lbs just like two people, they should pay for what they bring to the table.

This may not entirely be the case as the airline can always cut them a slack and not make their trip anymore uncomfortable than it already is.

I wouldn't charge them extra, I would let them decide.

  7. Why don't they just make the seats a little bigger?  i weigh 120lbs and i could definitly use more room!

  8. Yes. Not only cuz they are fat but because they cost the plane more fuel to carry them!

  9. shold stinky people have to buy two

how about mothers with babies buying two

How about all children having 3

How about small people only getting 1/2

  10. If they require two seats then they should be paying for two seats.  Embarrassing, yes, but the only fair way to go about it.

  11. its bad business for the airline if they dont! you lose a potential customer b/c some overweight dude has to take up another 1/2 of a seat!!

  12. this is one of those issues that I see both sides of the argument.anyway you slice it,someones gonna get offended.........

  13. if airplane seating was bench style..   it should cost by weight or width

the point isn't to degrade, the point is to be fair

'one person'.. you can't fix stupid, you can fix fat.

EDIT..  or have different prices for different size seats..   it's not always 2 seats that is needed.. but maybe 1 1/2.  i don't know why they make the seats so little any way.. half the time they have half empty flights.

EDIT ..  kitty..    some people think over eating is an addiction.. like alcohol or drugs can be.  no one wants to be an addict, it just happens to some people.

  14. Not until skinny ones like me get half-price.

Seriously-NO. That BS is simply one more excuse bigots have thought up to find a target to belittle and hurt.

  15. Yeah, they should have special seats for fat people, than again I got bumped to first class once cause a fat guy sitting next to me needed 2 spots, one of them was mine and no other seats in coach were available so I went to first class :D

  16. I think passengers should step on a scale with all their checked baggage and carry-on.  They should be charged accordingly.

  17. I thought they WERE charged for two seats??

  18. so a skinny guy with 4 bags is better than a fat guy with a small carryon?...what I hear is we  are blaming other passengers for our so called discomfort instead of the carrier who provides tiny seats...What is with the big fear of contact with your seat mate? afraid fat is contagious? how about the skinny guy who puts his seat back while you have a beverage on your table? that guy is thoughtless and he doesn't even care...so why do they have seats that go back 6" for anyway? bicker all you want amongst yourselves..the fault lies with the carrier....and anyone that judges someone else because they are different.

  19. yes they should.  It's not fair to invade the personal space of other because you like to over eat.

  20. Yes, you are right. Because if someone who was not obese requested two seats for one reason or another they would be charged.

It's not right to cater to someone who chooses to eat themselves to an oblivion and not do anything about it.  It's obviously not normal or someone to be overly chubby because everything is designed for people that are of a smaller frame chairs at the movie theaters, amusement park rides and so on.

  21. This can be a difficult question to answer.

You will need to look at boths sides of the business, as the passenger, and as the airline.

The airline is a passenger airline, not a cargo carrier.  If we are to be charged because of our size or weight then EVERYONE should have to go through a weigh in and be charged a rate based on weight and destination just like shipping a package through UPS.

But since it's a passenger airline unless the person is morbidly obese an extra seat charge should not be charged.

It is unfair to charge extra for overweight or oversized people if we're not going to under charge for small children, underweight or extremely thin people.

To say that the airline has to cover the cost of fuel because of our weight is ridiculous, how much fuel are we saving them if we were all underweight?  Or why aren't overweight or oversized people offset by smaller people?

An extra seat charge has more to do with passenger comfort and maybe safety.  It is uncomfortable sitting next to an extremley large person and in case of an emergency a very slow moving oversized person trying to get off a plane in an emergency might be a danger to the rest of the passengers.

  22. I am not a big woman at all and airline seats are small for me. I think they need to make decent human sized seats for us to sit in. If someone is overly obese yes they should have 2 seats or sit only by people within their party that wouldn't mind. However I think they already do this.

  23. Its another incentive to lose weight and another way for the airlines to make money!

  24. Normally this situation is handled with tact.

HOwever yes unfortunately for the ample people out there space on an airplane is premium and limited and if you do require 2 spaces should should indeed need to pay for 2.

IF you stink they can make you freshen up before boarding a plane.   If you are drunk they won't let you board.  Airlines routinely need to confront uncomfortable situation as a matter of passenger safety and comfort.   This is not intended to be cruel, almost all situations are handled with compassion and care.

  25. some airlines have already implemented this policy.

an airline can only sell the limited space on the inside of the plane. they set the prices according to their models who flies - based on one person per seat.

they could either make the seats wider, or the prices higher if a sginificant number of people don't fit in the seats. Or they could simply have people pay for the resources they use - 2 seats, and the weight allowances are correlated to the number of seats too, so people who are far over the average in weight are taking more then their fair, and limited, share of that too.

  26. Absolutely.  If they take up 2 seats, the should pay for 2.  My wife is nearly 300 pounds, though, and she fits in one seat just fine.  It's only the morbidly obese who take up 2 seats.  If the airlines want to take some 3 seat rows and turn them into 2 seat rows for fat people and charge them extra, then that would work.

I think that everyone getting on a plane should have to get on the scales and pay per pound.  After all, the weight is what determines the fuel mileage a plane gets, and it directly affects profits.

  27. NO...Airlines should make the seats bigger and less crowded.

  28. Yes, and also on trains.  Recently I traveled on an Amtrak train, basically a giant broken port-a-potty, and about half the passengers were so huge they took up two seats.  Plus several had children who were supposed to be traveling on a lap.  That's a bit difficult when there is no lap....

They should be measured like the under-the-seat luggage gets measured.  If you fit in the test seat, fine.  If not, double the fare.

  29. Of course they should.  Everything in transportation is measure on weight and space.  If you want to transport a car, it costs more than transporting a coffe mug.  That is because cars take up far more space and weigh alot more.  It costs money to move things.

Many airlines do require big fat ansty passengers that are spilling over into the next seat to buy another seat.  It is fair and make good business sense.

  30. Sure - the same day we administer a special tax on STUPID PEOPLE. After all, the entire society has to take up their slack.
