Question:

Should golf carts be street legal to offset the cost of gas?

I saw a clip on the news several days ago where some small towns are making golf carts street legal. They only are allowed to be used on certain roads though-like side roads or roads with a speed limit of around 25mph i think. Of course you wouldnt want them on any major roads or highways. I thought this was a great idea. I live so close to work that i could actually drive one to and from work and the store if this was legal in my city. Think of how much gas we could save if this became common.

Is this a good idea or not?

  1. In Avalon on Santa Catalina island off the California coast it is the way the locals get around. Golf carts on the mainland would only pose a great obstacle for the idiot speeders and tailgaters. There would be many accidents and fatalities because of the moron drivers speeding to get to the next red light.

  2. My uncle in Florida has one and it goes at a maximum of 12mph for about an hour, then you have to charge it overnight (all night). Not practical for the average family or even single person, I think.

It's about time those clever scientists developed an alternative fuel - we've had decades and decades to work this one out and we've just stuck our heads in the sand. Well (to mix a few metaphors) now the chickens are coming home to roost. The Arabs have got us by the short and curlies, and they're twisting 'em.

  3. Just a matter of time before we're all driving the things anyways.

    Or Vespas.

Unless we go Hydro, that would make for some pretty crazy crashes. And angry-projectile golf-clubs.

  4. Golf Carts are really not suitable for daily road use. They have a limited speed and battery charge life.

However, there is definitely space in today's world for a mains charged electric car, General Motors are working on one, but it's still a hybrid with a gas engine.

With advances in battery power and longevity I'm sure that bigger cities, NY, LA, Boston, Chicago, Seattle will introduce regulations (and tax breaks) to encourage a new generation of electric runabouts about the size a a Smart car.

The downside is that this will put more stress on the power companies as many thousands of elec-cars are plugged in overnight, so more fossil fuels will be burnt and the need for nuclear will become more urgent.....

  5. yea cuz there awesome to drive but very crazy handling would be many crashes
