My friend says that he breaks his fast with the adhaan that is broadcast on the TV even though the mosque is close to him and he cannot hear the adhaan from any other mosque after that.

He says that this mosque gives the adhaan after the other mosques. Is this correct or should he follow the nearby mosque even though their adhaan is later than the broadcast adhaan?.

  1. you can start eating when the muazzin say ALLAHUAKBAR .

  2. @dhul qarnain: yes it should be broken wen the sun sets but i hope you know that the maghrib adhaan is called wen the sun sets and so we  break the fast wen the adhaan is called. this looking at the sun 4 breaking the fast is correct amd was in practice during sahaba ,tabi.and taba tabi period even untill the modern clock discovered. So now we can depend on the clock . but  mostly when on travel and wen we cant hear the adhaan.if the atmosphere is clear without cloud or dust we can depend on this way of omar [r.a] but you admit that we are not perfect in calculating the day, time etc by looking at moon and sun an atmosphere as they were.

    any way,

the fast must be broken when the adhaan is called in the mosque cuz the adhaan on the radios and tvs might be the adhaan of a different place. if i sitting here plan to follow the adhaan thats bridcasted fom mecca the time is not the same.If the local t.v with same time of our area we can follow no problem

  3. As a matter of fact, breaking the fast wasn't related to Athan, but rather to the setting of the sun:

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 003, Book 031, Hadith Number 175.

    --------------------------------------...

Narated By Umar bin Al-Khattab : Allah's Apostle said, "When night falls from this side and the day vanishes from this side and the sun sets, then the fasting person should break his fast."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 003, Book 031, Hadith Number 176.

    --------------------------------------...

Narated By Abdullah bin Abi Aufa : We were in the company of the Prophet on a journey and he was fasting, and when the sun set, he addressed somebody, "O so-and-so, get up and mix Sawiq with water for us." He replied, "O Allah's Apostle! (Will you wait) till it is evening?" The Prophet said, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us." He replied, "O Allah's Apostle! (If you wait) till it is evening." The Prophet said again, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us." He replied, "It is still daytime."(1) The Prophet said again, "Get down and mix Sawiq with water for us." He got down and mixed Sawiq for them. The Prophet drank it and then said, "When you see night falling from this side, the fasting person should break his fast."

Therefore, I don't think it matters which mosque or TV Athan the respected friend of yours listens to, because Athan is normally done at the time of sunset.

Further proof and examples from Sahih Muslim:

    Book 006, Hadith Number 2421.

    ------------------------------

Chapter : The time for breaking the fast and ending of day.

'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When the night approaches and the day retreats and the sun sinks down, then the observer of the fast should break it. Ibn Numair made no mention of the word "then".

    Book 006, Hadith Number 2417.

    ------------------------------

Chapter : Excellence of taking meal before dawn, stress on giving It preference and preference for deferring it (at the f*g end of the night) and hastening in breaking it.

Sahl b. Sa'd (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The people will continue to prosper as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.
