Ok so my boyfriend is 6'4 and 220 lbs and I calculated his BMI and he is overweight. It's not fat though, it's muscle. He's playing college football this year so he keeps on working out. Is he supposed to stop so he can lose weight?

I'm worried about his health but he won't listen to me.

  1. If he's playing college football, the worst thing he could do is stop eating and working out.

  2. Overweight is overweight, 220lbs is only muscle as long you can't pinch more then pure skin on his stomach. The danger of so much weight is, that when you try to stop exercising, you explode, because you keep on eating.

My neighbor used to play football. He is now 40 and can barely waddle 6 feet without a break and sweat puring down his forehead.

  3. Starving him wont do a single thing except make him worse at foot ball, what you should do is make him eat good food, like salad with light dressing, grilled chicken or something easy to eat and good for you and the BMI sucks balls it is usually never right.

  4. Not eating is not healthy. Your boyfriend is healthy, because most of his weight is because of muscle. You should be concerned for yourself.

  5. if the dr. doesnt find anything wrong with him then he is fine. if dr. finds diebeties high blood pressure etc. then i would be worried untill then hes healthy

  6. Paige your boyfriend is a model of health...if you think about it 6'4" 220lbs. is about THE perfect size for an athelete no matter what sport.....your boyfriend is no doubt probably healthier than you are...plus even if the BMI was accurate what would he be...no more than 10 lbs. overwieght....im tellin you....people who dont know about fitness and health dont have any buisness telling a 6'4" college football player about his healthiness.....what is this world coming to?

  7. muscle ways more then fat, and i think that there is nothing wrong with continuing to work out to stay in shape.  so i think he's fine.  and most of all you should never starve your self for days to lose weight.  that is the worse thing you can do.  that is so unhealthy.  no one should ever do that.  there is better way to go about losing weight.

  8. Your BMI is a horrible way to judge your health. 6'4 220 lbs isn't very big. As long as he isn't getting a high body fat % or is out of shape I would let him keep going. I wouldn't worry about it.

  9. Those BFI ratings are for people the average person and not someone who works out.  My bodyfat is 10 percent yet I'm listed as 35 pounds overweight.  I'm 6' 210 so 6'4 220 shouldn't be an issue.

  10. merry birthday? wtf?

  11. 6'4" 220 doesn't mean he's unhealthy.  That's pretty much perfect height and weight for football, depending on the position.

The last thing a football player should worry about is BMI, because the BMI for any football player is going to be high.  For example, NFL running back Maurice Jones-Drew is 5'7", 208 pounds.  His BMI is 32.6, which is considered obese.  MJD has ZERO fat on him, though.  The BMI is useless for a football player.

The LAST thing he, or anybody, would want to do is to fast for 3 or 4 days.  That's just downright unhealthy.

And telling a college football player to not go to the gym is like asking one not to breathe.  College athletes, especially football players, need to constantly go to the gym.

  12. BMI based on height and weight is definitely flawed. It would be one thing is out of shape, but since he plays college football he's obviously in excellent shape and does NOT need to lose weight. Most football players are trying to get bigger, not smaller. BMI doesn't take into account muscle weight, which is a lot heavier than the same volume of fat. He should not stop working out.

  13. never stop working out you need to exercise everyday also you don't fat from working out

  14. Don't you think you got it a little twisted??? Shouldn't working out help him lose weight???

So you want him to starve himself so he can look smaller. But you claim to be worried about his HEALTH.

Does starving your boyfriend sounds healthy for him? Are you really Worried about his health or how you think his weight reflex's on you. Get your story straight.

  15. If he is not fat I would not worry about, he sounds fit and healthy.

  16. I think you are meddling where you don't have to and shouldn't.  A person 6'4" and 220 is very close to his ideal weight per the charts I consulted about losing weight (I am 6'2" and weigh a lot more than that.)  An athlete is commonly outside the range of standards.

    Part 1: Assessing Your Risk

According to the NHLBI guidelines, assessment of overweight involves using three key measures:

        * body mass index (BMI)

        * waist circumference, and

        * risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity.

"The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height and waist circumference measures abdominal fat. Combining these with information about your additional risk factors yields your risk for developing obesity-associated diseases.

    What is Your Risk?

    1.  Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat, which is related to the risk of disease and death. The score is valid for both men and women but it does have some limits. The limits are:

        * It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build."

Better you should keep an eye on him and when he is NOT working out make sure he cuts back on his calories so his weight doesn't blossom (or erupt.)

Not eating for 3-4 days is absurd and hard on the heart, especially if a person is working out.  If it works for you, how quickly do you gain it back?

  17. B.M.I is a measurement to define by height and weight and can identify obesity, but its not an accurate measurement for each individual person, so don't worry too much about it, long as he is eating healthy and obviously he takes plenty of exercise i do not think you have anything to worry about

  18. i understand that you are concern about your boyfriend weight , but if the coach not saying anything about it, and you boyfriend feel find then he should be ok, because you know they have to get a complete physical

  19. are you serious? if u are overweight because of muscle then you are morer than healthy

edit: oh yeah,,, if you stop eating for 3-4 days to lose weight than you should be worried about ur health

  20. If he is muscular and has a bmi of being overweight or just overweight over all tell him to do more of the cardio exercises and to cut down on such big meals and try to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day. And since he is an athlete the worst thing you can do is tell him not to eat he needs to eat so he can recieve a lot of energy from the food he eats. If he eats more fruits and veggies the better since these are good energy supplements that are natural and don't have much sugar. ( Fruits have sugar but they are considered a healthy sugar). If he eats veggies he will gain a lot more energy than eating any other candy or non- healthy sugary foods. About the cardio exercises tell him to go to the gym and stationary bike for about 30 min 3 or 4 times a week it will help out a lot.

    Hope this helps,

    Leo

  21. First of all, he sounds very healthy..

Second, don't ask him to not eat for 3-4 days..( even if he was 500 pounds overweight) Not eating is not the answer.

It's unhealthy, if his body is mostly body fat, but it sounds like he's mostly all muscle. It's fine.

  22. Being over weight is mostly a problem when you are fat.  I would be more worried about your health if you go 3-4 days without eating.  That sounds like a much bigger problem.  Once your boyfriend stops working out, then get worried because that muscle will then turn to fat.  If he is playing college football he should have trainers that will tell him if he is overweight.  You should just work on your anorexia.

  23. Girl let the man do his things....If most of it is muscle, he's not overweight. I'm 5'9 and I weigh 200 pounds and it's all muscle and bones....I'm in college too except I don't play football anymore...I work out all the time nad I plan to get even heavier, just pure muscle. So yea there are people even heavier that are all muscle and they are fine....As long as he keeps exercising, with lots of cardio, and not just getting fat, I don't know how he could get sick.
