Question:

Should helmets be used with bike trailers?

My husband and I disagree on the use of a helmet for our 3 year old.

I feel that my husband and my son should BOTH be wearing helmets but my husband will never be caught in one.

I insist on our son wearing one when he pulls him in his new bike cart. It is a three wheeled trailer that hooks to an adult bike and has a nylon covered metal frame.

Is he right that this is overkill on the safety? I'd really love resources to back up my side and hope you can help.

  1. A trailer is going to be safer then a child carrier but do you really want to take a chance ?  I would check with the state laws.

Trailers have been know to tip over when least expected.

    The link below may help.

Parents should set an example by always wearing their own helmet.

  2. Think about it this way... perhaps your husband is just worried about style points...

First, a trailer does NOT provide sufficient protection for children in a trailer. Your munchkin can still get serious head injuries tumbling around in the trailer.

Second, I am sure your hubby is a good rider and I'm sure that he would never cause an accident, but the protection isn't because HE is a bad rider, it is for the idiot coming around the corner that "didn't see him". Besides, what would you do if he got hurt? What would HE do if he got hurt?
