i heard that lifting weights is bad for a fifteen year old teenager that is only 5'8" and weights 135 pounds. that instead i should only do exercises like push ups, sit ups, and squats if i want to keep growing. is that true or is it a myth.

My goal is to be 6'2"

  2. yes if its wat u want!!!

  3. I really think it's a myth.

  4. Your goal of being taller has no effect on how tall you will be...Its genetics

  5. there is nothing wrong with it my little brother started lifting weights at the same age.

  6. that's also very healthy!!!! i would do that everyday if i were u!

  7. no you shouldn't because it will probable cast your hands

  8. im only 5'7" and 150 and i lift

  9. haha dude im 14  6'2 and wiegh 145 pounds and and kinda buff haha

  10. yes

  11. Its think  true u could stunt your growth but only if u overwork yourself. i say u should work out theres nothing u can do to help u grow better u dont get to decide your height.

  12. depends on age bc your growth plates grow so if your muscles grow itll stop your plates.

I dont know about your age.

  13. well, in my personal opinion, i don't think that you should be lifting weights for your age. /:

like, people say that it's fine, and even though you have developed your physical body shape already, your hormones are still growing & so is your brain, mentally.

you don't want to give it more stress by putting more pressure on your growth spurts. so, i think you should just stick to push ups, sit ups, and all those other things while your body is still growing.

but when you get older, like when you're out of school, and your body has already grown big and strong, then you can start weigh lifting and doing all of those complicated exercises that they do in the gym. [x

    hope this helped. <3

  14. Yes that is true. Lifting heavy weights stunts your growth. If you want nice, toned arms or something, just do 20 reps and lift 5 or 10 pound weights a night. Also, keep doing your push ups sit ups, and squats.

    good luck

  15. You realize that none of that has any affect on how tall you will or will not be.  Height is purely genetic, no amount of training will make you taller.

The only problem with lifting weights at a young age is that it may make you more likely to have issues like arthritis and the like.

Sounds like you bought into a myth...

  16. Aspiring to be a certain height doesn't seem like something someone can set as a goal - it's genetics......setting a goal to lose weight, or even gain weight - that is something one can change...but height?  It's like setting a goal to have your teeth grow in straight - they will grow in how they are going to grow in - straighten them later.

Anyway, if you have questions, talk to your doctor......I know that high school football players are lifting weights at your age....so if they can, can't understand why it would be bad for you.

    Oh, and by the way - I'm 5ft 8 too....and it's not such a horrible height.....

  17. I think your height is gentically predetermined however as long as you are lifting in moderation there will be no adverse health affects.  I wouldnt starting tomorrow try to max out your weight, but as long as you build up slowly you will be fine.

  18. You can't make yourself grow taller. You can stunt your growth if you continually deprive yourself of sleep/intake a lot of inappropriate substances like drugs sometimes...but insofar as growing taller, you'd have needed to start a human growth hormone regimen at a very young age. Maybe you will grow to 6'2", and maybe you won't. That's already decided in your genetics.

Insofar as weightlifting and calisthenics, I started lifting weights at age nine. I am taller than average and have lifted weights/done calisthenics for twelve years, all through the growth spurts of adolescence.

It won't hurt you as long as you use good form and good sense with how much weight you add. It certainly won't make you shorter!

But the grandmotherly types that tell you weightlifting at a young age will stunt your growth or bend your bones are the same ones that tell you not to swim for two hours after eating. They mean well, but they're flat-out wrong. So be encouraged and go hit the gym! ;)

  19. i heard from a lot of different people that if you carry heavy stuff like backpacks to and from school, it might affect your height.

i'm not sure if it applies to lifting weights, but im guessing it somewhat relates.

in my opinion running is the best form of exercise because it works your whole body instead of just one group of muscle.

  20. Dude, that's a bunch of BS. My FAT gym teacher said not to lift weights because it stunts your growth. I said it doesn't. She said yes it does. Then I tried this out, that was in 6th grade. I grew a little over a foot while I lifted weights. And by the end of Junior high I was a foot and a half taller. So, I think it's BS.

  21. i think its just in your genes dude cuz i am 14, 6'0'', 190lbs, i play rugby, i swim, i was born 5 weeks premature, i eat whatever i want, and i never do pushups or anything like that, and im fine. all the chicks want me lol

  22. It's the genes that dictate your height not the exercises you do.  That idea is a myth.
