Should i be so annoyed?

my father had my 12 year old brother over the summer, and he lives with his girlfriend of over five years. when he left to go back to my mom's house, my dad made my little brother write a thank you letter to my dads g/f for 'letting him stay there over the summer'. is that normal? it would be like writing a letter to your mom saying 'hey, thanks for giving me a bed'. i don't know, i found it very irritating. what are your thougths? should a child be forced to write thank you letters to thank their parents for taking care of them?

I think your father is trying to impress his girlfriend and at the same time teach your brother to thank people in writing... but it does seem misplaced in this situation.

Yeah, you have a right to be annoyed.  She knows she's dating a man with kids; by letting the kid spend time with his parent, she is merely not being a horrible person.  She's not doing something extraordinarily nice that deserves thanks.  If it really is a big sacrifice for her, then your father should be the one to thank her for it.

That's bizarre

Children should thank their parents for supper, or for letting a friend stay over, but I don't think he should thank his father's girlfriend for letting him stay.

It sounds like your father has his priorities a little screwed up. He may also be having issues with the girlfriend. She may not have wanted your brother to come and your dad is truying to smooth things over.. ( not your brothers problem)

I don't think he should have to actually write a thank you letter for something like that. Maybe your dad is just worried that his girlfriend won't feel appreciated. I don't know. I think a simple "thanks for everything" on the way out the door would suffice. Anyway, I agree that you should be annoyed.

No your father must have some issues with his girlfriend.
