Should i book a hotel first or wait for discounted last minute rates?

Hi, i will be travelling to hong kong in late oct for holiday. I have shortlisted a few cheaper options for hotels in TST like Mingle Place or Minden hotel but all the rates are not out yet and i was advised to check back again in early september. Coincendently there is a major exhibition fair going on during the period i'm visiting, hence most of the hotel rates are alot pricely then usual.

Should i wait until sept and check back again to book the hotel so that can get discounted rates?

Is it too late to book a room just one month in advance?

And sorry, no discount for you. October is our highest high season and ALL hotels charge over normal rate.

Book it as soon as you see a good price, hotel rates can double in price and are often fully booked during the late Oct.-early Nov. trade fair season. It's a good time to avoid Hong Kong as far as hotel prices are concerned. If there's any way you can move your holiday up or back, it's something you should consider if you're looking to save money.

This is a gamble.  

Book early and you're guaranteed a room at a peak demand period.

Book late, and you'll pick up the specials.

Nothing's certain, and a great example of this is when a major event flops, and they often do.
