Question:

Should i build my own sub box?

Just wondering, my budget is $60 and i need a sub box.

I have done quite a bit of research, but have never build a sub box, or much of anything out of wood before.

At my local hardware stores, a sheet of MDF plenty big to make a box for my 2, 12" alpines, costs $30.

I would probably be willing to spent an extra $20-30 on a factory made one, but i have heard that cheap factory boxes are c**p.

So to make a long question short, Should i bother making my own box with no experience other than watching Youtube videos and reading how to's on Crutchfield. OR Should i just buy a box that would have to be rather "bottom of the line"

Sorry this is so long, i just don't want to make any stupid mistakes.

Thanks in advance!

  1. if you have the tools to do so then try it. even if its not great you will feel good about doing the work yourself

  2. I just recently got done building my own box.  First time also and I must say it is not that bad.  Just do your research on the construction, and do not venture into ported stick with a sealed box.  MDF,Caulk, Liquid Nail, Wood Screws, time and maybe a friend to help.  All it took me.  Good Luck and have fun doing it I know I did.

  3. i firmly agree with the person above but if your looking for something that will fo surely work and sense you say your not so sure on how to make a box yea i wouldn't really do it. its not extremely hard to make one but it is extremely easy to make a bad one. it is easier to buy a box i have a site for you thiis company makes some of the best boxes or you can check crutch field before a top selling site so if your not comfortable with the site i give you i suggest you to buy one of the Q-logic boxes form crutchfield.

  4. are you building a ported box? if so you need to look up how to tune it or it will sound bad

  5. i highly recommend it just for the learning experience

that's the way you do it man as long as your specs are right

i guarantee it will look like (censored) but it will sound better than anything you buy premade and will cost less

the first box i made came out like c**p and i needed about 3 tubes of silicone because none of my cuts were straight and i couldn't wait for the d**n silicone to dry and it didn't have carpeting on it just a wooden box with pencil marks, crooked cuts and white silicone allover

but it was the best box i ever had lasted me three years until i got bigger speakers
