My car is 7 years old with about 72,000 miles but it is in excellent condition and I adore it so wont be changing for a while.

To be honest this depends upon just how you view YOUR car. Whether it is a part of your overall image or as a means of transport. Looked after, your 5 year old car very likely has another 10 years life in it as a means of transport.  

New car prices are not going to go down!  In all honesty, the ONLY sensible motorists are those who buy a well chosen 7 or 8 year old car, run it for 5 years and then re-sell, or run them until they are costing money to keep on the road.  By standards of 30 or 40 years ago modern cars will put up huge mileages.

The way you save money on is

(1) get a car in good condition

(2) maintain it well

(3) hold the car and squeeze every penny's value out of it

(4) make Lincoln scream for mercy

I have a 94 Civic with 187K miles (and runs like new).  That's how you make Lincoln cry.

My cars are 17 and 18 eyars old respectively!  They are both safe, fast, comfortable, exciting to drive, reliable and have years left in them.  I bought the pair of them for under three weeks pay, so if both of them totally die, the most I can be out is...  THREE WEEKS' PAY!   Servicing and repairs on them cost well under a weeks pay each for a year.

    And if you are wondering?  A gleaming bronze Mercedes 190E automatic with a gorgeous honey leather interior and great sound system, and a wicked Alfa Romeo 75 in Blood Red with a fir breathing TwinSpark engine, which is always an involving pleasure to drive.
